How much about kingdoms, phylum, class, etc do I need to know for AP bio? Is it only necessary to know every taxon up to phylum?

I know you definitely have to know up to Class for most of the phyla.

Would this be enough knowledge of the taxa?

Surely you don't need to know the class for all the phyla? Theres like 35 phyla and that means hundreds of classes??

This seems fine..

Well for kingdom animalia my teacher went more in deoth on the classes, but she was a little fanatical. That may be all you have to know for the exam.

on all the past ap bio tests and even last year's test, i didn't see any phyla beyond the basic nine for animalia: porifera, platyhelminthes, nematoda (and/or rotifera), annelida, mollusca, arthropoda, echinodermata, chordata. in fact, our bio book (starr) only listed those and i was fine for the ap test. i'd suggest you learn some of the major classes in those phyla (e.g. cephalopoda in mollusca, major classes in chordata, etc.) and also the progression of major systems from phyla to phyla and class to class in chordata.

the questions that they ask on ap bio regarding these normally ask like what phyla did such and such feature appear first in or something like that. or they give descriptions of major characteristics of a phyla for you to identify and match. stuff like that.

for other kingdoms, i don't remember as much. i'd say you should know some major phyla of fungi (ascomycetes, basiomycetes, etc.), plants (like angiosperms, pteridophytes, etc.), and protists (dinoflagettes, chlorophyta, etc.). just knowing the basic characteristics and the major phyla seem to be enough.

Thanks for the help everyone!

lol i somehow managed a 4 without knowing hardly any bio, most certainly not classes and phylums and such. it's funny, im reading this thread and i know nothing about anything that has been said

kriegz same with me, I am awful at biology and i got a 4...

same here...but thats cause it was independent study and we never got assignments for that section, thus we never learned it. So far, i've gotten the highest grade frm my independent study class, which is a 4.
