AP Biology vs. SAT Biology

I have heard that the AP is much harder than the subject test. Has anyone who has taken both have an opinion on that statement? Also anyone who has heard about the test differences and similarities please comment. I am wondering because I took the AP and I think I got a 5 or at least a 4 and I am taking the subject test in June (I'm using PR and used Cliffs for the AP). The scale for the subject test seems pretty hard while on the AP you can miss 20 and still get a 5. Thanks in advance.

I haven't taken either yet, but I am assuming that the subject test is easier. I'm studying for the subject test now since my school isn't offering the AP course next year, and so far the sample tests are pretty easy. The subject tests are designed so that you can do well with only taking a standard college prep class in the subject. Hope that helps

i took the sat II bio on may 6th and the ap bio on may 8th. wasn't fun studying in for it but i thought that sat ii bio was much easier. also, the curve on the sat ii bio is not harsh and out of 65 questions u can miss upto i think 5-6 and still get a 800 while in ap bio, where there are 100 questions u can miss 15. hope this helps.

the SATII bio has 80 questions and the curve is MUCH harder for it. For the AP Bio test, you can miss a lot (around 30) and still get a 5 if you do well on the free response section.

Thank you to everyone who responded. Does anyone with first-hand experience wish to comment?

I took the SAT II in May and the AP and I thought the SAT II was much harder and I got more wrong than on the AP. Also remember the AP curve is infinitely more generous and the SAT II often test and the most randoma and trivial info (the difference between the developing man and the primate? where al the choices seemed reasonable) whereas the AP is much more conceptual.

Totaly Agreed with bidkid (even thought i didnt take SAT II yet)..

AP practice tests were easier than the Sparknotes SAT II practice tests by a long shot =P

Yipes that doesn't sound good. Is anyone using PR and would like to share how their practice test scores compared to their actual scores?

Took the SAT ii the weekend before the AP Test and they are both similar question-wise but the AP is much more generously curved; also, looking at it grade-wise there is so much of a difference between a 5 and a 4 rather than between an 800 and a 790... its much easier to get that "impressive score" in the AP rather than in the SAT II

I have heard much comment on how the scales are different but what about people's actual experience with the tests. Perhaps the content on the subject test is easier?

The AP test is much more detailed and really tests your knowledge of biology. The SATII is broader and more general and usually has random questions about bio. It also has a lot more data analysis. So the SATII requires more thinking rather than just memorizing biology.

The SATII was harder for me then the AP.

I do well on the essays and not so well on problems with experiments, which the SATII had a lot of.

Last year, as a sophomore, I got a 730 in Bio M, and a 5 on the AP. I felt that the AP had a greater opportunity to show what you knew well. Like for the SATII, there was this one section on the placenta and development, and I didn't know any of it. There was also some section on wavelengths or something. I guess I got kinda unlucky byt having those. On the AP, if those topics showed up, and I didn't know, I was able to skip them and still get a 5 by doing well on the many other questions available (including the FRQ).

what are the experiment/data analysis questions like? how can you prepare for them?

any others?

I think the SAT biology test is a lot easier than the AP test.
I got a 790 in freshmen year taking Bio-M, but if I looked at the ap exam, i would be totally lost.

well IMO its more of a 'one-way' Thing, if you took AP biology , then looking at SAT II Biology at first will be hard, but u can easily improve and study it reall quick using a prepbook (all u would have todo is read it), but if you took SAT II and had no idea about AP, then you ARE going to be lost..and you would need a LOT of studying (well ..SAT II would help but not that much)
PS: all of this is IMO
Another PS: i am assuming that u actually STUDIED for AP biology, and did good...not went through the test w/o studying...

i definetly thought the sat 2 multiple choice questions were harder than the AP exam. the sat 2 had a broader choice of questions and i saw questions concerning stuff ive never thought of before.

the APs go into a lot more detail while SAT II is a little easier. but in all honesty, it is really what you do good on. if its multiple choice, then SAT II. if its essays, then AP
