AP Calculus and Washu Placement Exams

Do we still need to do the placement exams, such as the Aleks and Readiness for Caclulus exams if we get a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam??
thx

I believe you do because they use AP for credit and those tests for proper placement.

what school are you in? At least in Engineering, the AP exam score is enough for credit and placement, and the only reason to take the exam is if you want to try to place higher (which isn’t a problem for you).

I believe ypu have to if you are going to take any Calculus course at WashU because I think it counts for 10 percent of your grade? I heard that somewhere…

It says in the email I got that the aleks test is ten percent of your calc grade but I wouldn’t imagine that means that you have to take the placement test.

My son was told by the Engineering School that he had to do both - the placement test and the ALEKS. They each took an hour or two - he didn’t think it was such a big deal.

I’m in architecture and I dont think I’ve gotten anything on the ALEKS program, even though I’m required to take calculus. The placement test said i’m definitely ready for calc II tho and i’m expecting a 5 on AP Calc AB test. the only place ive heard of ALEKS is on here i think.

Newprov29 - my son is in engineering, so architecture may be different. But if I were you, rather than rely on these message boards, I’d make a quick phone call to someone at Wash U who could definitively answer your question.

I’m engineering, and you have to take both the Calculus Placement test and the ALEKS course. The ALEKS course counts for 10% of your grade in Calculus, so you should probably do this one.

The Calc placement test is also required if you’re taking calc because “We ask that ALL students (Art & Sciences, Business, Engineering, Architecture, Art) who are planning to take a calculus course during their time at Washington University take this test online.” according to the placement test website.

I agree with kaykay…don’t fret too much. Neither takes overly long to complete. (For the ALEKS pre-test, double-check for typos and don’t put in unnecessary parentheses because if you miss a question on the pre-test, you have to do practice…)

yeah I did the placement test for Calc II a little over a month ago. And I asked Dr. Thornton from the Math Dept, and he told me to do ALEKS. The initial assessement was I think 211/215, so it didnt take very long to at all to just get ALEKS out of the way. thanks for all the input everyone.
