I honestly can't decide whether to take AP Calc or AP stats for my senior year. I want to go to chapel hill but I am afraid that is I take it it will bring down my gpa. Right now my gpa is about right for unc-chapel hill (3.95 uw and 4.5 weighted) so I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

Take AP Calc. It’s regarded as a more rigorous and challenging course, which colleges like (just make sure your colleges accept whichever one you take, if you’re taking it for the college credit).

Calculus is more fun too! :)

JustVibe, that’s totally opinion I know plenty of people who would hate calculus.

My suggestion, look at what you want to go into. If you want to do, for instance, political science, stat is going to be much more applicable. If you want to go into engineering though, calc is going to help more. I’d choose that way, not how you think you will do. I’m sure if you are looking at UNC you’re smart enough to pass either.

ITA with Crimsonstained.

@Crimsonstained7 Yeah haha sorry, bias on my part ^^. Our Calculus teacher (AB+BC) at our school is supeer fun. She literally has kids do problems on the board and if you get it right, she will scream with joy and tell you to “make out with yourself.” She’s always energetic during lectures. We even take group and partner tests… Most of us pass the AP test too :D. I had Stats and personally it was boring, but I guess it depends on the curriculum of the school and who is the teacher.

Do you need another year of math at all?

I’m taking AP Statistics and AP Calculus right now (haha they are one after the other in my schedule also) and I love them both! However, I think Calculus is harder and considering more rigorous by colleges. Statistics has a lot of real world uses, though, and is useful for many college majors :). I would do some research and pick the one you think will help you more.

I’m currently taking both and Statistics is a class where you have to be able to think more. Calculus is a lot more simple and you only have to follow what the teacher is writing on the board

Calculus makes you a stronger candidate for competitive college admissions. You can take statistics in college to fulfull distribution or major requirements.

I take AP Stats and AP Calc and it matters what type of math you enjoy. Stats is little math work, mostly on the calculator and you given a formula sheet. It’s all about about remembering terms and execution. Calculus is all math with difficult theorems and equations but nothing that’s impossible. Once you learn the rules and theorems its breaks down to algebra really. Personally Calc looks more competitive to colleges.

Calculus is nice!

I thought Calc was hard at first, but it really isn’t. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it.

Harder to get into UNC from out of state, so AP Calc will be better credential, along with the high GPA. If you really believe you can’t keep your GPA up, you have a tough choice. In-state, I’d say take what you want to! Better chance of success with a class you WANT to take.

Thank you so much for all the responses it really is helping me work it out! I am starting to lean towards calculus because it looks good on the resume. But the reason I’ve been cautious is because my school does “block scheduling” so that means 90 minute classes and usually four classes a semester. I’ve only been in Honors Pre-Calculus for three weeks? No idea if I will be good in this class I am just guessing how I am going to do in the future. You guys gave me a lot to think about! Thanks again!
