AP Chemistry...should I try or not?

I have a good chance of getting a 4/5 on the test if I start studying now. I will be majoring in chemical engineering, possibly doubling w/ chemistry...I start next year. Should I try on the test and place out of chem 101 or is it better to take chem 101?

Everyone I've talked to at my univ. says to take chem 101 since it's an easy class if you already know the stuff...but I don't want to be bored. Thoughts? Experience?

I would say to skip chem 101 for the reason that it will be an easy class and if you want to double major you will want all of the open space you can get in hopes to possibly still graduate in 4 years. Just a personal opinion.

I would definitely take the AP exam, especially if you know you could score high on it. College admissions eat that stuff up.

The only advantage of taking a Chem 101 class, in my opinion, would be to make sure that you have learned everything expected from your future professors and in the way that they teach. Taking and learning chemistry from three different teachers has taught me that there are (unfortunately) many approaches to the science.

About it being an easy class, I’m not sure if I want to have all hard classes my first semester of college life. I think I’d know enough material to do fine in the next level, but I don’t know how long it will take me to adjust to college classes.

Katertot, I’ve already been accepted to where I’m going, so I’m not worried about that. I’ve taken 3 semesters of chem in hs, and I’ve had the same witty, laid-back, intelligent teacher for each class…maybe I should just take the class.

I’m definitely taking the ap exam though, because my school pays for half of it, and if we don’t take it we have to pay the school back for what they paid ($43) and we don’t get the ap credit on our transcripts.

Getting out of first semester of Chem with AP Chem exam will be difficult since the dean (or person in charge) of the chemistry department has to approve. The only way for him/her to approve is that you have to have evidences of your laboratory work in class. Moreover, first semester of chem would be more in depth than AP Chem since it covers MO theory and some other hybridization theory and other topics not covered in the class.

For me, I have made the decision to take first semester of Chem in college even though I received a 5 on the exam because I want to become a competent chemist and gain the necessary lab experience.

However, take the AP Chemistry Exam just as an evaluation of your knowledge in Chemistry. If you get a 4 or 5, be glad that you can review and understand Chemistry in college more easily than others.

I were you I would study a little but not worry to much and still take the intro chem class.

I also would like to major in ChemE but I’m a junior so I’ll need a refresher. But if your afraid you won’t graduate in time than skipping might be a good idea.
