***AP Chemistry Thread 2015-2016***

So I am in high school right now and during my first semester I got a D in AP Chem. It was a rough first semester. Now it’s the second semester and I am studying so hard but I am still getting consecutive D’s on my tests. I am solving problems, taking notes, watching helpful youtube videos, I am doing everything I can.
It’s my junior year and I am freaking out because a D is unacceptable. I was wondering if anyone has any tips? Do you think colleges are going to ignore my application because I go a D?

…I got a 30 on my first AP Chem test of the semester and I don’t know how.

@XoXdreamerXoX

Lmao kinetics & equilibrium?

I just took my test and I totally blanked out on initial rate method. Thankfully i got two questions related to reaction order right (guessed).

My teacher doesn’t scale to AP score even though his exams are AP style. This test had 30 mc so 5 wrong is an 83 :frowning:

fml chem is hard

LOL I just finished Acids and Bases
What prep book should I use? Do I need to buy a book or will I be fine by just doing practice AP tests?

@bsdsj22 No. It was over types of attractive forces. I read the question wrong and bombed it. Lol. Whoops. I’ve gotten straight 100s on everything else, but that test is keeping me at an 88.

We just finished reviewing the Arrhenius equation–not exactly sure what that would fall under. Rates of reaction?

@XoXdreamerXoX

That’s Acid-Base Equilibria. We’re a little ahead of you in that chapter. It’s basically just a bunch of ICE tables.

Does anyone have the official practice MC from last year? I’m self-studying in less than a month so I want to make sure I know what to study. If so, could you DM me? Thanks so much in advance(:

Also, if anyone has suggestions about which books/prep materials I should use that should be great. I’m not completely clueless - I took AP Chemistry two years ago, but my teacher was horrible and my score was not up to par so I’m retaking it this year. I took the first year of Chemistry HL this year (basically Honors Chem) so the fundamentals are fresh in my mind.

I just realized how screwed I am for this test… It’s partially my fault for sleeping so much, but it’s zero period and it’s just so hard to wake up so early.:(((( Also, my teacher is soooo bad. She goes off topic so much and she basically told us how she doesn’t care about students’ learning anymore since they can no longer fire her since she worked there for too long. How can I cram this all before the AP test?? The problem is not reviewing but rather actually learning the material that the “teacher” failed to teach. She hasn’t even finished teaching…we still have 2 units to go.

I’d like to add that I enjoyed chemistry when i was in Chem honors and was able to maintain a 98, mostly because I had a teacher that actually cared about our education and who was willing to help us get the material down. (We only have two chem teachers at our school. Both teach honors and AP but only one can actually teach) It was when I saw my junior year schedule last summer that I knew I was screwed. I should’ve gotten a tutor…

@donaldtrumped I feel (although in my case it’s my own fault). Since my previous post on this thread (where I detailed my predicament), I’ve been doing a bit better in chem (I would have done even better had I not figured out my new plan a few days before my last test). So basically on this one post I looked at on cc, someone suggested checking out Rene McCormick’s NMSI AP chemistry recordings. I have to say they are really good. She takes things at a pace that I can keep up with, and to follow along NMSI (the national Matt and science initiative) has a conjunction website with accompanying lecture notes and practice. She takes you through the problems and concepts/had recordings for tackling frqs for each subject. Btw McCormick also used to help write the AP exam so she knows her subject. And she’s funny too.

So my recommendation is to watch the recordings for your final two units and then go back from the beginning. You’ll have to dedicate a LOT of time but imo it’s worth it. She’s become my second teacher :slight_smile:

I’m currently a sophomore. I want to take AP Chemistry and I haven’t take regulars or honors Chemistry. I’ve taking AP Biology currently, and AP physics, and some other non-math AP/AICE classes. My teachers wouldn’t sign me off for AP Chemistry since they all say it’s a 2 years course. I just got back from my counselor and she wouldn’t sign off on that. I have basic understanding of some chemistry from my physical science class in middle school, such as balancing equations, the periodic table, and biochemistry from AP Chem, and also some chemistry from AP Physics. Do you guys think it’s worth it since I can ask my dad and they might be able to override the decision. By the way I’m already taking 6 other AP classes next year.

…don’t take seven AP classes. I did that and it has pretty much ruined me. Please stay at 6. If possible, go down to 5.

I’m doing AP Calc AB, Stats, Physics 2, Language, US History, Computer Science. In my school, I think Calc is not a heavy class, Physics 2 is a light weight, Language is a heavy weight, US history is a light weight, and Computer Science is a light weight with no homework. The only class that is real heavy weight is AP lang, though our school offers AICE (cambridge program) English A level which is much easier. My friend in AP Chem thinks it just requires a lot of brain power, but he finished Calc in 9th grade. I think I could also do AP chemistry, though I could just go with AP Computer Science Principles or some other easy AP electives.

@airyboy I personally don’t think it’s worth it, especially with all the other ones you’re taking. Unless you’re genuinely/passionate about the subject, it just looks like you’re taking APs for the sake of it, which won’t get you far/will come to haunt you. Chem needs a LOT of time given to it and you literally won’t have that time. A bunch of “lightweight” classes accumulate. And the months leading up to the AP exams will be awful. Just my two cents. Honors Chem is just as fine.

Hey guys. Is nuclear and organic chem going to be on the AP exam? My teacher says they will be but my review book and the CollegeBoard outline didn’t say anything about them.

Do we need to know colors for the AP Chem exam? The old MCQ seems to have questions on those…

I’ve seen someone mention videos by Renee McCormick on the National Math and Science Initiative. How can my daughter access that?

Man it’s the first AP exam of the week… I’m so scared

What book are you guys using to study for the exam? Since it was recently changed I’m hesitant on using some of the older review books.
