Well, I am currently a junior. I currently have only one AP: Chemistry. I signed up to take Physics I Honors, Spanish III Honors, AP Stat, AP Literature, AP Calc AB, and AP Bio next year. I am also taking AP Gov and Politics over the summer. My school offers 15-16 AP's max. Most top kids take 4-5. If I do this schedule, I will have 6. My rank is about 15. 4.0 UW. 4.58 W.

If I keep up my A's with this senior schedule, will it help reduce the bad fact that I am only taking one AP this year? I know colleges see your senior schedule and grades, but will it be bad that my junior year was not very good? If anyone can harness details or personal experience I would appreciate it very much.

VERY! It’s the first year that EVERY school looks at and they expect you to challenge yourself. I took 4 AP classes and 5 exams (private study for AP Music) my sophomore year and I believe many of the top schools are looking for that … along with the straight A’s …

Not very important. Many schools (including mine) don’t even offer APs to sophomores. Just keep getting As and develop your ECs. Junior year is 10x more important.

Personally, I think it’s all relative: meaning that if your school offers a lot of AP classes, and you only took a couple, it could make you look bad because you aren’t making full use of the resources available to you. My school only offers one AP class to sophomores, thus I only had one AP class sophomore year. I had 5 both my junior and senior year, for a total of 11 AP classes come graduation. My advice: if you’re really worried about it, study independently and take the test without taking the class, and then in your essay provide a reason, very subtly, as to why you didn’t take the class.

I only took three… And I got a B both semesters in AP Chemistry.

They only offered AP Euro, and AP Chemistry was only for a select few… AP Human Geography was an elective. But they’ll know that I made use of what was available, right?

Uhg… Can I make up for subpar grades this year with more AP classes next year and a high rank?

Saugus: I think that they will definitely take into account that you only had those three AP classes available to you. And more AP classes and better grades can never hurt :)
