I'm kind of confused how this whole ap credit thing works. For example, I got a 5 on my macro econ exam ---> how does this benefit me in the long run? It doesn't exempt me from any classes that I have to take because I didn't take the micro exam. I read that I get 5.3 'semester units' from the test, but what exactly does that mean? Is it equivalent to a 5.3 unit class that I would take at berkeley?

Those units go toward your grade level standing and you get earlier Telebear Phase times. :)

And, someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it also goes toward the 120 units you need to graduate.

yes, exactly. You start with 5.3 units toward the 120 needed for an L&S degree, rather than zero, assuming that is your only AP. If you have other APs that earn credits or other college classes, they are additional units.

A four year completion of the 120 units for a degree is an average of 15 units per semester. Many students come into Cal with more than 15 units of credit, thus having skipped a semester worth of classes they would otherwise need to take.

Now, it takes more than simply 120 units. You need specific units for the breadths, AC, your major and if you haven’t already satisfied them, the language, quant, AWPE, R&C, and american history needs. There are also some additional requirements, e.g. a minimum number of upper division units earned, a minimum number earned outside of your major, a minimum taken in the college of L&S.

Someone with a fair number of AP tests passed could enter their freshman year with enough units to be considered a sophomore, thus getting the better telebears appointments given to that class level.

APs can serve as qualification to take certain classes which have a prereq of the AP’s subject. Some departments will credit you as having taken specific classes if you did well on an AP, if they consider the AP to be equivalent. Thus, if one or more courses are required but the department approves your AP as equivalent, you won’t need to take them at UCB.

Wait, so that means that I’m entering Cal with 28 units?

Could you guys double check this for me?

Biology - 5 - 5.3 Units
US History - 4 - 5.3 Units (Says it satisfies the American History && Institutions requirement)
Lit and Comp/Lang and Comp - 5/5 - 5.3 Units (Skipped out of R&C)
US Government - 5 - 2.7 Units
Chemistry - 4 - 5.3 Units
Computer Science A - 4 - 1.3 Units
Statistics - 5 - 2.7 Units (Skipped out of Quantitative via this or 720 Math SATI)

Taken 3 years of French at my high school, so no Foreign Language as well.

But is it true that if you end up taking an equivalent course at Berkeley, they only count either the AP credit units or the course units?

Bump, anyone please?

If you take the courses that your AP credit exempts you from, you get credit for that course (or those courses) plus you get to keep the credit from your APs
