Hey for Penn is getting a 5 on the AP Calc BC, Micro/Macro, and English Lit exams worth it?

Basically is the "credit" they give substantial or important credit?

here is the AP policy website: Penn Admissions: Advanced Placement Policy

Thanks! :)

english lit isn’t worth it, the others are

Micro and Macro is worth it ONLY if you place out of both.

@AstonMartin: how so? There is a strong chance that I might only place out of Macro and not Micro (self-studying)

@tenebrousfire: why is English Lit not worth it?

english is a free elective, which doesn’t help with anything at all.
for econ, if you’re in wharton, you take both in one semester, so you’d need to get both. (also, see the similar threads links below…)

@mattwonder: I saw somewhere posted that getting this free credit will help you get into some sort of academic society or something? and also will getting the free credit help you at all towards fulfilling grad. requirements, or does “free” credit really imply “free” (and useless) credit.

@tenebrousfire: I saw you make a post in another thread about maybe credits not being worth it because if you don’t get them then you can take intro level classes that can boost your GPA. Is this the same case for the tests I am taking?

nah it’s worth it for these, just not sciences as much

@tenebrousfire: haha, alright. Thanks. On a side note, how does Math 114 compare to 104 in terms of difficultly level (of course 114 is a higher level of math, but I’m talking about factors other than that)

dunno, only took 114 =p

sorry i wanted to bump this question again, i’m not sure if you saw it tenebrous ;)

this is referring to the credit you get fro getting a 5 on lit:

“I saw somewhere posted that getting this free credit will help you get into some sort of academic society or something? and also will getting the free credit help you at all towards fulfilling grad. requirements, or does “free” credit really imply “free” (and useless) credit.”

never heard of the free credit helping for academic society stuff

and the free credit just fills an elective slot, it can’t satisfy requirements

so basically when you say its useless are you saying that most people will easily be able to fill up their elective credits anyway, without such help from ap english credits?

or, in another situation, with this free credit it wouldn’t really be doing me anything because in the end i’d essentially just end up completing one more elective “class” than other kids are?

the latter

you want to take electives, they’re fun

alright then, that seals the deal for me: no studying at all for ap english lit, haha :). thanks for the info tenebrous.

how substantial is the credit for bio, chem, and psych?

substantial enough to satisfy prerequisites

A 5 on English Lit can’t be counted towards English major requirements, either? Like there is literally no advantage for me to do well?

Lol sorry, I’m still getting oriented…

As we’ve said quite a few times, there is no advantage in scoring well on the English AP exams.

english major requires 12 classes

[English Department - University Of Pennsylvania](http://www.english.upenn.edu/Undergrad/standard.php)

and you can’t use ap credit for any of them, i think
