AP Economics Credit

I have gotten 5s on both the AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics exams.

The MIT 2016 information on AP Credit (link below) lists the two exams as giving General Elective Units, but it doesn't list if it allows you to place out of certain classes such as 14.01 and 14.02.

Looking at the course descriptions of 14.01 and 14.02, they match the AP Curriculum very closely and I feel very capable in both subjects. On the Economics Department page the state: "[For an Economics Minor,] Any student who receives permission from the Economics Department to skip 14.01 and/or 14.02 and take a higher-level subject must take replacement subject(s) for 14.01/14.02."

Does that imply that it is fairly common to place out of 14.01 and 14.02? I cannot seem to find any information on the matter and I would hate to largely repeat the material as 1/3 of the entire study for the minor.

Thanks.

14.01 and 14.02 covers more than the AP Economics curriculum, so you will most likely not be able to skip those two classes with just AP credit. It is more math-intensive (you can see the sample final exams on OpenCourseWare). But doing well on the AP tests will certainly make the classes easier, so you can focus more on your other classes.

I read “any student who receives permission from the Economics Department to skip 14.01 and/or 14.02…” as indicating that you must petition the economics department for permission – they do not grant automatic credit for 14.01/2 for AP exams.

It’s possible that the department may allow you to take advanced standing exams, or to provide some other evidence of your mastery of the subjects.
