As mentioned in another thread, I’ve contacted UA to inquire about elective credit for AP Environmental Science. Specifically, I queried Dr. Shane Sharpe, Dean of the Honors College. His generosity/support, and UA’s unflagging can-do spirit, are key examples of the many reasons we chose Bama. Here’s what he wrote:

“I believe [your son] may be able to get a credit for a geography course for the Environmental Science AP exam. The Registrar works with the respective academic disciplines to make this final decision. I will start the ball rolling with an inquiry to the Registrar in the morning to determine if we have an official course designated for the Environmental Science exam. If not, we can begin working with the Registrar to get credit for an elective. I will contact you as soon as I have an answer from the Registrar.”

I’ll post Dr. Sharpe’s response once he receives an answer from the Registrar.

I just received an e-mail from Kiki Karatheodoris, Honors College Registrar. She forwarded to me the July 2 announcement of Mark Nelson (Vice President of Student Affairs), which in substantive part reads as follows:

“The Department of Geological Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences, has
approved the award of UA credit for the AP Environmental Science exam.
This change will be effective Fall Semester 2010.”

Special thanks to Dean Shane Sharpe and the can-do faculty and staff of the Honors College for addressing this question so quickly. My son now enters UA with 22, not 18, college credits. Gotta say, I’m loving Bama and we haven’t even started yet :)

Sweet, I took it for fun even though I hadn’t taken the course because my school had a grant that payed for it, and I got a 4, so more credit :)

FYI, GEO is UA’s designator for Geological Sciences. Here’s the course description:

GEO 105 Sustainable Earth. 4 hours

Three lectures and one laboratory. Lecture and laboratory provide an understanding of important earth resources (rocks and minerals, soil, water, fossil fuels, alternative energy) and how their utilization by humans impacts the environment. Includes discussion of water pollution, air pollution and waste disposal as primary issues related to resource utilization.

They are so generous with AP credits. My son is starting school with 29 units. This really helps to make sure that he gets out in 4 years and he can still have some room to try out a few courses of interest that might not count toward his major…Out here in CA UCs were not so generous and with all the budget cuts the idea of a minimum of 5years for a BA was discouraging.

I am so impressed with this school and the way they treat our students…ROLL TIDE!!
