AP Lang & Comp. for a not so good writer?

Hello CCers, I am going to be a Junior next month and I'm trying to decide whether I should take AP Lang or not. Here's my current schedule:

Precalc HN
Physics HN
AP Chem
APUSH
Orchestra
English 11

I am a math/science person, I breezed through algebra 2 HN and Chem HN the previous year and I'm sure Precalc and Physics won't cause me much trouble this year also. Now I'm considering of taking AP Lang & comp. instead of regular eng class, but I'm not a very good writer. I've never written an essay longer than 4 pages double spaced. I'm not a fast writer because I take a lot of time thinking so timed essays can be troublesome. I am aiming for the top 30 colleges, so I know I should take AP Lang but I'm afraid of getting anything below B. I'll be perfectly happy with a B- though.

So what's AP Lang like? will there be a lot of workload? Long essays? what are the tests like(not the AP Test)? Ultimately, should I take it or not?

You need to find out about AP Lang at your particular high school. If more than one teacher has a section of the class, you need to find out about each of them.

At my HS, it was an immense workload. Most essays had to be less than two pages, although we had to do like ten one-page responses for every book we read. The tests were just quizzes that tested whether or not we read the book closely.

As the above poster mentioned, things will vary from school to school. At my school, the advice I give is that if you are up for the challenge, are serious about improving your writing and reading ability, and don’t just want to take the class to impress colleges, then you should take it. It was the most beneficial class in terms of personal growth for me. I came in not even knowing how to write a thesis statement, but came out with the ability to output consistent A essays.

Asks seniors what they thought.

I was kind of in your boat. I was awful at writing, but I improved. I’m not great, but I’m certainly capable of writing a decent college essay and I wouldn’t have been able to without experiencing a harder language course with a great teacher.

In short, I loved AP English Language. The teacher was an ironhard Republican and Christian and wasn’t afraid to spew those values into class (I hate teachers who preach values, regardless of their beliefs), but she was a harsh grader on essays. The class made me appreciate how important writing was and we worked on writing that was outside of the curriculum. We did resumes, creative writing pieces like memoirs, college essays, and SAT essays.

Thanks guys, I think I’m going to try AP LANG! :D
