I’m thinking ahead to the AP tests and that most likely the results won’t be back before my son has orientation in June. Specifically, how do you know which calculus to sign up for if you don’t know how you scored? Thanks for any insight.
Well, a lot depends on your math placement test. It is mandatory for ALL incoming freshman, without exception. Completion is required BEFORE your orientation session. Still laughing at the scene one mom created because she thought her daughter was an exception so she didn’t do it and therefore wasn’t allowed to register for any classes until it was done. So while all of the rest of us were picking our kids up to leave, her daughter hadn’t been able to sign up because she was busy taking the exam. Her mom was not happy, to say the least.
Anyway, the highest level math you can “place” in (based on this test alone) is MATH140 (calc 1). However, if your AP test score is high enough, you can register for a higher math. So, how do you know what to register for without the score? That depends on your adviser. My son was allowed to sign up for calc3, but maybe only because he had to waitlist the section he wanted. His was told that if his AP score didn’t come in high enough that he would have to switch to MATH140. It may be that his adviser was more lenient because he did have friends that were told they had to sign up for math140 until their AP scores came in, and then they could switch.
Once you go to orientation , the “block” on your student account is removed, so you can make changes to your schedule any time after that. So, if they only let you sign up for 140, once your AP scores come in, you can change into the higher math because you will have the AP credit noted on your account
@maryversity , I’m still confused about the Math placement test. How do they do that? Do they have to go to UMD? Or do they take it online?
@Astro77 It’s online and must be taken before your student goes to orientation.
It’s online. Here is the info on orientation page

And here is the more detailed info with links to practice test and actual test

Thanks, maryversity!
