Seeing as it's currently AP season and most of us are worried about our scores, how much do these scores actually matter in the college admissions process? Should we be worried if we get a 1 or a 2 in an AP course in the relative field of our intended area of study? How do these stack up to SAT II - Subject Test scores, and the grade in the class overall? And maybe the ultimate question: should we cancel our scores if we know we failed an AP exam (before the deadline on June 15th)?

No college requires you to send AP scores for the purpose of determining admission. Moreover, the majority of colleges won’t consider them for admission even if provided. As to high rank colleges, AP scores may be considered as one factor along with all others, although SAT subject test scores are far more important for colleges that require them. For those high rank colleges, you only need to self-report AP scores in app or essay if you want them considered, and thus don’t need to incur cost to send them official scores until after you are admitted if you want credit.

Exception to above is that there are a very small number of colleges (NYU included) that accept AP scores in lieu of your sending SAT, ACT, and/or subject tests. For those, if you choose to use AP scores for admission, you must submit official scores.
