Secondly, I will be getting a C in AP Stats for my first semester of senior year. I am an RD applicant but I have all A's and only two B's (in Math, surprise surprise) in my transcript and i have various qualities/hooks Columbia might be interested in. I'm not going to waste your time on the circumstances or go on a rant about my teacher, but I do have a family issue that relates to that grade. Will explaining this and having an Assistant Principal who knows what type of student I am help explain this situation help or hurt? Most importantly, will having a C in a subject I have no interest in extensively pursuing beyond high school put my application in the trash bin?

Just sounds like you're not that good at math. I'm not sure what sort of issue you have, but unless it's really compelling, you'll hurt your application if you attempt to whine and make excuses. Furthermore, if your other grades are good this semester, you had better have a logical reason why whatever your issue is somehow impacted only your stats grade and not your other classes; otherwise, it doesn't make sense.

I seem to remember you were a journalist with lots of outstanding EC accomplishments and generally good grades besides.

I don't recall what quality of high school you go to - that will make a difference.

My inclination is the same as C02's - don't go making excuses. It's not severe enough to be worth the trouble. I was admitted with a full-year B- in biology and C+ in sophomore french.

Why fret about Columbia when you've got Stanford. I'd be more worried about Stanford rescinding or getting ticked off than not getting into... Columbia...

Damn, really? I had no idea

I keep on telling people I had a 3.3 unweighted in high school. I don't wear it as some sort of badge of pride, but it didn't come from nothing.

It mostly came from an unwillingness to do rote memorization. The more challenging the class, the better I did. I mean, look at those two classes listed there. Page after page of memorization, both of 'em. Far worse than Chemistry.
