Hey everyone I'm trying to figure out my schedule for next year and I'm considering taking AP stats. I'm taking AP calc right now and next year I'm in some Math 5 class (I hear we basically don't do anything) so this would be an extra math class. what do you guys think of stats? easy? hard? interesting? I was kind of interested in sociology or political science as a major for when I go to college, so stats might be helpful for that. I don't really know. . . any input would be awesome! Thanks!! :)

yeah i heard stats is an easy class...and the AP credits is helpful 2....i suggest u take it u could always drop the class if u dont like it..good luckk

AP stats isn't a tough class...D and math nerd friends say it's not "really" math...

I am taking AP Stats this year. It definitely isnt hard, and yes some would argue that it isnt really math, though there are some instances in which there is some calculus present, although you dont have to use it. It is probably the easiest AP I've taken, and I really enjoy it because there are a lot of real world applications and I think it is really helpful, especially if you are interested in poly-sci.

Stats is incredibly useful, take it.
Of course it has a reputation for putting people to sleep (the origin of the oft-heard joke "If I had one last hour to live, I would spend it in my statistics class -- it would seem that much longer.") So hopefully your teacher's good. Otherwise get David Bock's book Stats: Modeling The World, which could substitute for a teacher any day.

I'm taking AP Stats this year, and I'd say it's pretty easy. I mean, it's definately not a typical math class. The math skils you need for this class is very minimal -- the hardest stuff I've seen are exponents. The key is to be able to explain your reasoning well. Sometimes, my homeworks wind up looking like essays.

Also, it's INCREDIBLY boring. My teacher is a great teacher and she honestly tried to make the class fun, but all she gets is a dead classroom. If you can manage to pay a ttention in class, I'm sure most kids could pull off an A with minimal studying.

Thanks everyone! I'm still trying to decide, I'm choosing between AP stats and this foreign policy class. The foreign policy one sounds really interesting, but it's not an honors or ap. and I don't want my reason for not taking a class to be because it didn't boost my gpa but. . . .you guys prob know what I'm talking about. oh well, I still have a couple days to decide. any more imput would be awesome! Thanks again!

ap stats is really really easy compared to calc, at least at my school, so if thats what you're looking for go for it

..i'm a soph and next year i will be ready for calc ab but i think taking stats would be a good choice for a junior year schedule.. i'll already have a lot of intense classes and stuff and math is NOT my thing. i plan to take a lot of psych classes in college that would be based on stats.... but what is more impressive to colleges? calc ab jr year and then calc bc sr year or stats jr and calc ab as a senior (then my ap score won't be visible until after they accept me... :)) hmm. or not? help?

Stats will totally change your perception of the world.

but then i won't have a full year of calculus on my record when applying to college... i really WANT to take stats and would be good at it (and i'm not a math person).. and as far as scheduling goes, it would be great for a hectic jr schedule, but what looks best? do they expect non-math kids to have calc ab in jr and calc bc in sr year? the only reason i plan on taking calc is because it's the next yevel up (will be self-studying precalculus this spring/summer)

How's AB junior year and Stats senior year sound?
It'd be nice to have BC thrown in there somewhere, though. Maybe self-study BC junior year while taking AB, it's about four more chapters. But of course it'd make for a hectic schedule.

Blairt, you do not take AP Calculus AB and then AP Calculus BC. AP Calculus BC includes all of AP Calculus AB material plus additional topics. Contrary to popular belief, AP Calculus BC is not Calculus II but Calculus I AND II. AP Calculus AB is just Calculus I. You do not need to take either for college, but for science, medicine, engineering, and other technical/math-related majors, it is a good idea to start with at least AP Calculus AB.

BTW I will take Precalc/Stats (IB Math Studies and AP Statistics) next year and AP Calculus BC my senior year.

Blairt- if I were you I'd just go for Stats. It's still an AP class so it's not like you're slacking off!

I'm in AP Stats right now and I really like it, and I'm not a math person either. If math's not your thing there's no reason to put yourself through the hell of a really tough math class.

Don't worry about colleges "expecting" you to go all the way to AP Calc BC if you don't like math... it's more important to do well in advanced courses in whatever subject you're tenatively thinking about majoring in. It's not like every math genius who applies to good colleges has taken a ton of AP history classes- sure, a lot have, but not all of them, and they still get into great schools. Case in point: My friend who's currently in Calc BC got accepted to USC and is up for the Presidential Scholarship, and all of the AP classes she's taken have been in math and science... No AP English or AP history classes, but she applied as a Bio major so it was more important that she showed that she could handle the work related to that major.

so what about stats jr year and then calc bc senior year?

do you need precalc for stats or just algebra ii?

^ Yeah, or even just Calc AB... either way it's still two years of AP math.

I'd recommend Pre-cal because a lot of stuff on the SAT is pre-cal based... but I didn't take Pre-cal and I'm doing well in AP Stats. You're a sophomore, right? I'd recommend AP Stats and Pre-Cal for your junior year (AP Stats isn't that bad so I think you could handle taking Pre-cal at the same time, if you have room in your schedule) and then Calc AB or BC for your senior year, depending on how much more math you think you can handle, lol

i'm going to do precalculus through Stanford EPGY (online) after I complete Algebra II within the next month or so... so then i have 5 months to do precalculus and then possibly stats jr year and then.. eh. calculus isn't turning me on right now.. i could be taking classes like english and history electives and psych and whatnot. i don't know. we'll just see.

How much harder is Calc BC over Calc AB?

lol..math is NOT my thing. any subject is my thing over math. even math-based science.. math and advanced foreign languages.. they keep my humble.

You need precalculus or college algebra for AP Calculus but not for AP Statistics. At our school, Algebra II is "highly recommended" but in other schools it is required (for stats).

If you think you'll forget algebra/precalculus topics by the time you take AP Calculus in 12th grade (since statistics is very different), take Calculus AB/BC your junior year and AP Statistics your senior year. That is assuming you're taking precalculus in 10th grade and not 11th grade (concurrently with AP Statistics).

ap stat is obscenely hard. i hate math, so i thought stat would be easy, and i'm currently failing. it's probably my teacher though. there were no a's or b's in any of his classes on our last test.
