AP US: New DH vs Old DH?

The old one costs like $250. The new one, The complete insider's guide is a lot less. Is the 2nd book really like the old one? Can someone who has it review it? I've never seen it mentioned on here, although it's by the same author.

I doubt there is a big difference between the two…but if you can buy it to see for yourself…

Can you link us to the “new” book? I just have the DH in a flash book that has a small American flag thing on the front

And the old one cost me only 12 bucks…

Just bought the book through Amazon for my son…same author (Larry Krieger) as Direct Hits. I think he is now publishing under InsiderTestPrep with the US AP history book called: THe Insider’s Complete Guide to AP US History:The Essential Content.

THe book is excellent. He gives insider tips for each chapter on what is typically included in AP tests and what is important to study and not to study (I think he analyzes old tests and sees what is important). In addition to detailed chapters, there are also 65 key terms need to study as well as top ten lists for major themes, such as women reformers, literary authors and top ten lists by chronology. At the end of the detailed chapters, he also provides compare/contrast lists for topics that have been included in past frqs such as populists vs progressives (thought the comparisons were very helpful).

So looks like a great book…hope this helps!

^How much does DH or Insider help on the essays though?

For me DH completely destroyed the FRQs…easy 5

Oh. I was always under the impression that DH helped much on the M/C but skimped on details when it came to the FRQs. Any other experiences with DH and the FRQs?

I took apush last year, got a solid 5…I didn’t need any of the DH info…

All you need are two books

 1. Amsco flag book (read through the entire book 2 weeks before exam)
 2. Either the DH stuff, or a great alternative (which is what I had) was REA Crash Course (Author is larry k, same as the DH). The crash course book literally had the same concepts on the AP exam word for word!

Most importantly, take practice tests!!! I took about 3-4 old exams and about 30% of the questions were recycled (some were word for word)

does anyone have both the old dh and the new edition? is the newer one that much different?

I only want a 4, but if I happen to get a 5 that’s awesome, but will the old DH guarantee that ?

hmmm…I’ll bump this up!!!

This sucks. I have Crash Course - no fancy DH or Insider’s.

I’m guessing that unless I buy DH or Insider’s, I’ll have to do some heavy-lifting to study for the FRQs. It sounds as if CC is only good for the M/C, and DH or Insider’s excels even on the FRQs.

I do also have Barron’s, REA (big one), AMSCO, Kaplan, and 5 Steps to a 5 :o. However, none of them are good for the M/C section.

Where did you get practice AP exams from past years?

^Ask you teacher for them. Teachers have access to ALL released items, including multiple choice tests, and it doesn’t hurt to stay after school for about an hour to take MC tests in timed conditions. You should refer to the Collegeboard site for the FRQs.
