Ap

Hi!

On my UC application, I put that I was taking AP Econ, and maybe AP Spanish, but I am not. Do I need to tell UCI that? Will they kill me for not taking it?

Also, because of all of my IB tests, I do not think I will have time to study for the AP Gov test coming up on Monday. If I perform poorly, or decide not to even show up, will that be bad, especially if I am not taking two tests I told the UC system that I was taking?

Thank you!

AP tests are not connected tot he actual admissions decision so nothing will happen. However, you should tell them not to expect whatever it is you will not be doing now.

So then why are AP tests even taken? Just for credits?

Also, do you know what scores UCI awards credits to for both AP and IB? What does getting the IB Diploma do?

Some AP tests count toward your GEs like Chem or Spanish. Depends on the score and the test. The rest can give you elective credit and stuff which pretty much just gets you a better registration window...which is quite handy, I must say. That and I get to say I'm a Junior at the end of my first year here.

Here's the list for IB: <a href="https://www.admissions.uci.edu:8443/ib_chart.html%5B/url%5D">https://www.admissions.uci.edu:8443/ib_chart.html</a>
AP: <a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/adminfo/freshman/advising/credit/irvine.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/adminfo/freshman/advising/credit/irvine.html</a></p>

I hate to say it, but the IB diploma is pretty worthless in terms of skipping out of classes. You'll get units, but won't get to skip out of much.

What if you had put an AP test on the original application, but then decide to cancel your score after taking the exam?

Did you really say that you were taking a specific AP exam on your application? Or did you just say you were taking the class? Taking the class is completely different than taking the test...

I don't think they would mind if you don't take the test, but you did take the class and got better than a D

It doesnt matter if you take the test for the AP class that you are taking. It is recommended since if you pass, you get about 8 credits, which is 2 classes a quarter, which makes a difference in your registration window. Also the class for which you are taking the AP test for may get you out of other classes, or placement tests. So check it out. I got a 4 on the AP chem test, and with that i got 4 elective units and passed right out of Chem 1A, and did not have to take the placement test either.

are you not taking the class or the test. because uci doesn't care if you take the AP test or not. Now if you decided to drop out the actual class, that may have another effect. I dont think that it should matter about your acceptance, but it might. I would wait it out or ask uci about the matter "on behalf of a friend", if you understand what i am saying.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been really busy lately.

Kadya: Well, I sent in a request to cancel the score since I was a hundred percent positive that I did horribly on the test. My question is, would cancelling my AP score be seen as a decline in academic rigor and would this be possible grounds to revoke my decision? My GPA is pretty decent and so far I have all A's and B's in my second semester.

Thanks.

cal90:

It is not grounds of revoking admissions. You're good to go! Good job not letting senioritis kill you haha. A lot of others seem to be dying...

Thanks jas0n, I'm glad that there's nothing to worry about...about the senioritis, I've had a really bad experience sophomore year with slacking off and I promised myself that I would not go through that again.

cal90:

yea, dont worry about it. it doesnt affect you in any way. the ap test just lets gives you credits for college if you pass. whether you pass or you dont, doesnt affect your admission status in the least bit. hope to see you here soon :)

Thanks for the warm welcome, Kadya. When I called the admissions office they told me the same thing but also said to contact my admission counselor to notify them.
