My D is moving into an apartment complex in August (as a sophomore). The apartment will have living room and dining room furniture (cost of rental built into the lease) and she could, for an additional $25/month order their rental bedroom furniture (bed, dresser, nitestand...no desk/chair tho) from the complex but she we feel that she should have a new bed/mattress (because she has mold/dust allergies). Where is a good place to get her this stuff? I posed this question on livejournal and "rooms to go" on Newberry was suggested. This stuff is beautiful (on website) but ....wow, do most kids spend $3000 (with tax and delivery) on college bedroom furniture? Sears online has the cheapo stuff by Sauder (you assemble it yourself) for about $1300. What do most people do? Anyone have any experience with this stuff?

Have you tried Costco? They have good-quality but fairly inexpensive mattresses. Also, you can just use a metal frame for the bed -- college students don't really need headboards. JC Penney might also have some good options and you could have them delivered locally.

Are there discount bedding stores in town like Mattress Barn or Mattress Giant? Or 1-800-mattres? You can surely get a mattress, box springs, metal frame for a reasonable price. Dresser, night stand, desk and chair could come from Target, etc. Rooms To Go is rather pricey and not exactly dorm/apt furniture. At least not on my budget.

Someone also mentioned Ashley Furniture on Main St. but...it is very close in price to Roomstogo and not as nice looking.
We just have to decide if we will get her real furniture (roomstogoish) or "disposable" furniture (target etc...) There are a few bedding stores in Gainesville though I cannot remember which ones. Also FYI, just found Craigslist...lists people selling their stuff very cheaply:

Ashley and City Furniture are similarly priced and charge for delivery. And can be more pricely that RTG. Maybe RTG Kids has better priced furniture more appropriate for a college apt. It's one thing to splurge on Bedroom Furniture as a wedding gift. I think $3000 is a bit much for college bedroom furniture. College kids can be hard on furniture.

Its just a college apt no need to go crazy on furniture especially since being at uf your kid will probably be out partying, studying, or doing something away from their room (in this case apt.)

Yea furniture can be pretty tricky, usually it's a little here and there from all roommates. That's why most people just pay extra for furnished apartments. I got my bed with just a metal frame from some warehouse for pretty cheap. It's not the most comfortable bed in the world, but it'll do. I bought my desk, a TV stand, and bookcase from Office Depot/Target and just assembled it together (those came out to be about $150 and the bed was about $190 with frame). I brought a dresser and night stand from my room back home.

Seiclan, if you have any old furniture you want to get rid of, that's usually where most college kids get their furniture from. Plus it gives you an excuse to get new furniture, lol. My parents gave me an old living room set that my roommate brought up with his truck. I see you said that her living room is furnished, I'm just speaking in general.

I think it is worth it to buy her a new bed, she will be using it for at least 3 years. But I wouldn't spend thousands of dollars, find a middle ground. Try the Lazyboy on 34th street in Gainesville, I think they sometimes have pretty good deals and of course they deliver, so your daughter won't have to annoy a friend who has a truck.

We own a consignment furniture store in our town and sell new bedding and used furniture (and new furniture too). We often load up the Uhaul for people with their finds from our store to drive up to Gainesville. They make their purchases now, layaway or whatever, and by July/Aug, we are loading them on their way up to school. You don't have to buy in Gainesville!

Oh, are you near Boca/Parkland/Coral Springs????

When S1 moved into his unfurnished Gainesville apt. in 2005, we bought him a new bedroom set and desk at Aaron's Furniture. We got him a queen bed, chest of drawers, nightstand, computer desk and chair for $499. Then we went to Ashley Furniture for the mattress and box spring for $418. Both of those prices included delivery. The people at Aaron's were VERY nice and accomodating but the salesman at Ashley was a jerk. If Aaron's is still there, I think you can get a pretty good price for a new set.

Our two stores are located in Pinellas County, Tampa area.
This is definitely a great way to save money. Consignment is a great way to recycle and our new mattresses are alot less than 400 dollars!

is there a min height or cubic ft for minifridges?

"is there a min height or cubic ft for minifridges?"

What are you asking? I think you posted this on the wrong thread. In the dorm last year, most kids had the waist-high minifridges. In apartments, there should be a full sized one in the kitchen.

lol sorry. i was wondering if there is a height limit or size limit for the mini fridges for the dorms.

Ubiquity- from the housing website:

Full-sized refrigerators are provided in the Beaty Towers, Keys Residential Complex, and Lakeside Residential Complex facilities. Residents in all other halls may rent or purchase a refrigerator no larger than 12 cubic feet and 3.5 amps that meet all fire and safety requirements.

ooh. thanks!!

Most buy 4.2 or smaller. 12 is huge.
