Apartment hunting pickle (CAP)

So I’m currently doing CAP at UT Tyler for aerospace engineer. I have a pretty good GPA (3.9) and I’m pretty sure I can keep that GPA throughout spring semester too. I’ve heard that almost all the reasonable priced apartment in west campus living is taken by the end of october/ early November. Do you guys think this is true? Could I possibly wait until late January or early February to pick an apartment so I’m at least confident of being able to transfer to Austin? I prefer West campus living, but if you guys have recommendations, I am all open ears. I’m thinking of either an efficiency room by myself, a 1 bed by myself, or 2-bed apartments with a roommate. My price range is preferably less than 1100$

The better places in West Austin do fill up early. Your best chance in West Austin would be to find an open bedroom and your budget of $1100/mo is fine for that. You could also check out the coops. There are other options - north of UT, in the Far West area, east Riverside. They all have alot of UT students, bus transportation to UT (both UT and Capital Metro) and cheaper rents.

What we have found in Austin is that you only need to sign up early if you are dead set on a certain West Campus location with certain roommates. If you are willing to take an empty space and are flexible with the dorm/complex you will take, you’ll be able to get a place. A lot of people signing up now for next year will change their minds about where they want to live, will decide to leave UT etc. The sublet forums and Perents forum fill up with offers throughout the summer.

With Skyloft and Aspen Heights opening next year, there will be more supply in West Campus next year. People who want to live in a new building will live there leaving space in the older units in West Campus.

Some of the units (Callaway, Castillion, probably others) will take a deposit and a signed lease but let you out of it if you send them proof you will not be attending UT by May 1. Not sure if CAP will let you know by then? Because those have meal plans and utilities provided, they are more than 1,100 a month. Other American Campus sites might do the same.

Dobie always seems to have space well into August and it is practically on campus.

As the mom of 3 LH’s I can assure you, you will be able to find something in March. Even April or June. As the person above said, Dobie will be available. We also looked at apt (the more popular ones close to campus) in March this year and all had spots available.

I’m going to stand corrected…I just went back and looked at our lease documents and apparently we signed in October of last year! Sorry for the misinformation. That said, my daughter transferred 2 years ago and was able to get a spot at Dobie in June.
