I'm transfering to USC in the fall but am having a hard time finding good apartments. All the apartment review sites online seem to rate every apartment complex in downtown/wilshire/hollywood badly. Anyone here have any good experiences with apartments within 10-15 min drive of USC?

heres a solution- Live on campus!

transfer students cant live on campus.

part of the USC experience is havin a strong bond with the campus. and a big part of that comes form living close to campus. as a former transfer student, im tellling you not to get an apt far away. not even downtown. from my experience, the students who are less satisfied are the ones who live beyond walking or biking distance. i know it kind of sucks, but it is what it is.

FWIW, I have a feeling apartment review sites are like StudentsReview.com, where all the people who wanted to rant about their poor experiences, but the ones who have a great time don't have time to post a lengthy review on their experiences.

Any of you guys have any near-campus apartments where you had a good experience? I'm going to LA in a few weeks to check everything out so any advice would be great. Thanks guys...

Could you contact the USC Housing Office? I would think they'd try to help you find a suitable place to live, even if they don't have room for you in campus housing. It IS in their best interest to have all students enjoy their USC experience & I'm sure you're not the 1st student to have to search for housing, especially if they don't provide housing for transfers.

Here's the link on contacting them:

Try Conquest Housing too.....although I think their prices are ridiculous. You may also want to go to the online version of the Daily Trojan, click on classifieds, and look at the apartment/room listings. I personally would not recommend getting a place too far from campus. I lived in a place 1/2 block from the Vermont Ave. entrance and it's really convenient...no worries about commuting.

Can you get this link? This is the Daily Trojan classified that has apts. Furnished rooms, near campus and some a bit farther away. There should be something here to suit you.

mrtrojanman - just wondering...why cant transfer students live on campus? does usc offer apartments for them to live in?

According to this, transfers can live in USC housing.

you can live in USC housing, it just wont be on campus. and if you havent gotten word from housing by now, your chances of getting USC housing are slim to none.

Apply to USC housing. I was told there's a lot of space this year for transfers. Just do it ASAP.

Umm...this isnt related but i wanted to ask what are the general criterias for transfer admissions...I mean of course there is a holistic review of the application but i've been told that its usually a good GPA and rigorous course work that counts the most while transferring...if this is so...what GPA can be considered competitive or better.\???

Also people have told me that the SAT's and High school GPA is not that looked into ...is that true

as a general rule, the more college units you have, the more your college GPA matters and the less your SAT and high school GPA matters.

Why do you want to live 10-15 min away from USC? I think it's important to know that before giving you advice. If it's your personal decision to live that far away, then I would suggest finding an apartment in the mid-wilshire/park la brea area. You can find a decently priced (decent in LA terms) apartments along that area and it's a nice location in terms of shopping/dining/etc.

Also if you can schedule your classes perfectly (i.e. first class starts around noon and last class ends after 7), living in West LA (i.e. Santa Monica - they have rent control - or Century City) can be 10-15 min drive. Shocking I know, but I know for sure you can do it.

I'll be living in City Park apartments next year, it's on 30th and really close to the campus. Not the BEST, but not bad for the prices. Although they did raise the fee :[

How far is the Park La Brea/Miracle Mile area from USC? I know its like 7-8 miles but how long is the drive with traffic and all during the morning and afternoon?

I'd say about 20 minutes. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the freeway (most of the traffic), another 5-7 minutes to exit off Hoover or Vermont, and 3-4 minutes from Hoover or Vermont to SC.

I guess you must be looking at the Park La Brea apartment complex. I haven't heard good reviews of that place. The landscaping is nice inside but that's about it.....
