You know that in the applications for HYP and a few other colleges, there's a section that asks you whether you have ever applied to the school previously. What exactly is the point of that? Do I get disadvantaged if I apply to HYP both during my junior and senior years?

Junior and senior year of high school? Or college transfer, though why would a senior apply?
If in high school, you shouldn't apply in your junior year - you'd only have 4 semesters for the GPA, rather than the usual 6 (EA) or 7. You wouldn't have a chance to show a difficult courseload in your junior and senior years. Basically, HYP wouldn't accept an applicant based only on their 9th and 10th grade years.

I'm sure there are some kind of restrictions on who can apply, and which applications they look at.

Sorry if I somehow misinterpreted your post.

there was a guy from my school who applied junior year and got rejected. He later applied during his senior year and got in. I think that section shows your interest in Harvard. For example, it asks whether you applied for summer school there.

I don't have a perfect GPA (top decile at a very competitive private school). I don't think I can improve my GPA a lot even if I wait a year. I'm a sophomore right now, and I'm taking about 3 AP's and multivariable calculus. After my junior year, I'm going to have to fill up my schedule with independent research. Well, I thought that if I were to do research at a high school, why not do it in college? That's why I'm thinking about applying to college a year early.
