No this isn't a joke, I was wondering if any of you guys knew much about App State..

It seems like it is the college that is almost perfect for me, pretty campus, not too big, good sports, awesome town, but the only problem is it's not highly thought of at all, and I don't want people thinking I'm retarded for going there..

Have around a 3.3 UW GPA (4.1 Weighted), 1350 SAT, and good ECs, coming from a top 10 High School in FL

If you're planning on going to grad school, don't worry about it. People will only look at your grad school and it's not like it's freakin' Pensacola.

I've been considering it as well (albeit as a safety).

There are a couple of posts in the music major forum describing visits, locales, pros and cons. You may want to search there. Some music specific info, which can be sifted through for general comments.

It seems to have a very good regional rep, supportive faculty, and is fairly low cost, even for OOS.

It has one of the most respected Schools of Music in NC. It has a respected business school. It is becoming, actually, very selective and no more just school for kids who got rejected at UNC-Chapel Hill. It is a bit "hippie-like" in some of its student body. Very liberal in some respects. But has some serious programs.

Its not "in the sticks". With the completion of a major four lane highway it is now just a tad over an hour to Winston Salem, and about the same to Charlotte.

Its a HUGE sports college and highly competitive: 3 peat National Champions in NCAA Div 1-AA football (with an awesome marching band, by the way.) Also highly competitive in basketball.

They will make the leap to Div. 1-A shortly in my view.

I've heard good things about this school... well, I've heard it is becoming a good school, that is. If the school continues to improve, you will do well to be associated with it.

App State is not even the 5th best business school in all of NC (UNC, NCSU, Duke, Elon, UNCC, WF) and has the 5th best incoming SATs among NC publics. Why go OOS for the 5th or 6th best school in a state like NC? Even in arts and music, UNC-Arts is tops.

Boone is in the sticks. It's in a town of 15K, the county is full of parks and poor folk. The only thing it's got going is that it's on the highway between Johnson City and Winston-Salem, 50 miles away. That IS the definition of rural.

Come on, people, you could do much better if choosing an average regional/commuter school. Or at least go to UNCW, Salisbury, ODU, Coastal Carolina and live on the beach or UNCC, Towson, GMU, Winthrop and live in/near the city.

Why do you care so much about trashing AppState Ferryboat? Did they do something to offend you? Its bad form to trash schools or their location.

This isnt a one size fits all process. I know people who DESPISE UNC-Chapel Hill, had the scores to get in and GO TO APPSTATE by choice.

If someone wants to go to AppState or go to school in Appleton Wisconsin, its no big deal to me. I am happy to give them my opinion and wish them well. The OP has an interest in AppState and if he wants to go there, then sure he can.

And btw, AppState's business program is widely respected.

AppState is higher ranking than UNCC, Towson, GMU, Winthrop, Coastal Carolina.

I have nothing against App State, I have everything against people using these forums to lure students to mediocre colleges. App State is none of the things you said (except sports).
App State is a fine school. However, it is not a good school you suggest it is. It's name does not carry any weight. And certainly not in business, when there's at least 5 better programs in the same state (and Charlotte, Atlanta and DC firms recruiting region stretching even farther to include many more schools). It's not diverse (90% in-state, 90% white). And that's before asking yourself if you want to live in Boone, in economically depressed western NC.

There's literally hundreds of colleges that are better in any number of measures. But this isn't a rankings thing. You get to a certain point where rankings don't matter any more. It takes a very special fit to go to any school with any of the following attributes, let alone all: public, not diverse, B students, commuters, sports school, 37% 4-yr (63% 6-yr) grad rate.
To anyone OOS, I suggest before applying at App State to visit the college and area. And if you like it, visit the dozens of 2nd/3rd-rate publics that may be a better fit or offer in-state tuition.

Have you even been to western NC? It takes a very special person to stay there for more than a week.

The 4 UNC publics with higher incoming SAT scores: UNC, NCSU, UNC-A, UNC-W.
And UNC-C and UNC-Arts aren't far behind. Neither are GMU, Coastal Carolina, Towson, and Winthrop, which I offered as a slightly more attractive locations for students.

If your point is that AppState is a good choice for the right fit student wanting to go OOS to receive a 2nd/3rd rate education with white kids from western NC that support sports and enjoy rural activities, then great. You really helped out that 1 kid in the entire world find the school. However, if your point is that App State is a good college, you have a long way to proving your claims.
I'm all ears. As are many others. The exploits of App State's sports teams have put their name out there. Now is the time is back it up with something credible. What makes App State good? What makes App State better than the aforementioned 6 NC schools? What makes it attractive over the countless 2nd/3rd rate publics out there? Why should some one pay OOS tuition to go there?
