Appeal a rejection?

First of all, congrats to all those who were accepted. You really deserved it. And I’m sorry to those who didn’t hear good news, it will all work out in the end. So…

I got rejected from BU, and I was wondering if you think it would be a good idea to appeal the rejection. I have 2 34 ACTs, 780 Math 2, 760 Chemistry, 760 Chinese, and 730 Bio E. <15% GPA in my class. My main reason for this appeal is that I am not sure if I was reconsidered after not getting an interview call for the Accelerated Dental Program. (BU’s Accelerated Programs call potential acceptances around Jan/Feb to interview. If you don’t get called then, you don’t get into the Accelerated Program. If you do, you can either get accepted or rejected at the normal time.) The rejection did not state from what school or from which major. On the Common App, I had to select CAS for my school and Accelerated Dental Program for my major (the actual major for the program is Biology). I submitted 4 recommendations total. The Program required 3 itself (from history, english, and science) and I had an additional one from my math teacher. It also required 2 SATIIs (Math 2, Chem, and an optional foreign language). I also had to write an additional 750 word essay. The application deadline for the program was 11/15. I met all of their requirements.

So I clearly didn’t get into the Accelerated Dental Program and was not really expecting to given the very competitive nature of it. But I am very surprised that I didn’t get in during the normal regular decision round given that BU was considered a safety for me by my guidance counselor. I called BU in Oct/Nov 2013 to confirm that if rejected from the Program, I would be reconsidered and they said I would be. Again, I’m really surprised and I just want to know from you all if an appeal is reasonable and/or a good idea in this situation. Does anyone have any knowledge about or experience with appeals? Congrats again to all those who were accepted,

If you appeal they will audit your file to ensure that you were properly considered for regular admission to BU. If you were and you were rejected by CAS, they will not change the decision.

Rejection appeals aren’t a “second shot” so to speak at getting an admissions officer to review your application - Boston University isn’t a safety and I have seen a number of kids rejected in the past few years who have had excellent stats - BU admissions officers know what they’re doing; if they deemed you not the right fit for their class, you received your decision accordingly.

Ok thanks to both responses. apparently I was wrong about the whole process. If you’re not admitted into the Program, then you’re not even considered for the regular admission. it doesn’t say anywhere on their website but my friend who did the same thing emailed back in the fall and they replied saying that you aren’t reconsidered. I am confident that when I called to ask, the person said you are reconsidered. I honestly thought that I would be reconsidered after that call. Again, nowhere on the website did it say I would/wouldn’t be reconsidered. Is an appeal still reasonable?

Just do it, yolo. But do you really want to attend a school that rejected you? Seems so desperate.

I didn’t complete the accelerated programs application. I didn’t know that I needed a rec from a language teacher and by the time I found out about it it was winter break and I couldn’t ask for one but I had already submitted the common app with the accelerated program essay. I have 3.93 uw and 4.33 w as well as a 35 ACT. I’m just confused.

I applied to the accelerated program, but also selected the option to be considered for the college of general studies. I was rejected with a 3.7 UW GPA and a 2320 SAT. I am very frustrated.

@dontrejectme I think what my son has experienced might provide additional insight. He also applied to a seven year program and was not invited for an interview either. When he called at the end of Feb to confirm if he won’t be picked for interview and did confirm he didn’t make it, he requested to be considered for another CAS major and the request was granted over the phone. Today he got the acceptance. My understanding is the 7-year program applicants won’t be automatically considered for other programs unless they request it explicitly. If he doesn’t make the original program and doesn’t ask for reconsideration, then BU might just reject…hope this would help.

@menacing I think u’re right… @dontrejectme you’re a very compeptitive candidate and there’re many excellent schools out there waiting for u. I don’t think u’ll really feel comfortable to go to a school that rejected u. Also it’s just a safety school! U might have already got into some other “better” places.
Good luck :smiley:

@menacing - I’m actually from the Boston area and my sister currently attends BU. Also, my mom went to BU, so it’s definitely a school that I would be happy going to.

@quotable - This whole process was definitely confusing. Hopefully everything works out for you.

@Garchinger - Thank you for the comment. It definitely helps. My mom contacted a friend who works at BU and he said this is the first year that they don’t automatically reconsider 7 year applicants. Hopefully BU can understand my confusion.

@YammyNug - Well, I feel like I wasn’t even given the opportunity to be considered along with all the other regular decision applicants because I did not know of their policy to not reconsider students (which, by the way, is nowhere to be found on their website), especially given that I called and the person I spoke with said I would be! As I said earlier to Garchinger, this seemed to be the first year that they didn’t reconsider the applicants. Given that I called their office in September, it’s somewhat plausible that whoever I spoke to wasn’t updated.

Anyways, thank you for all the comments. Fingers crossed for a positive response on Monday.

Well I think u should give it a try then, as it sounds so unfair to u. Good luck!

I’m in kind of the same situation, although I didn’t apply to any specialized program, just CAS. I got wait-listed with a 3.85 UW and a 2180 SAT superscore (although I only submitted a 2100 superscore when I applied), 790 US History, 750 Math II, 740 Biology E. According to my schools naviance, accepted students average weighted GPA is around a 93 (3.8 at my school), which is my unweighted. I admittedly did not submit SAT II scores, mainly because I considered BU a safety (according to my schools history), but also due to the fact that I took them in November and December. My mid year grades unfortunately were pretty bad (79 in AP Physics C, 85 in AP Calculus C), however my grades in previous years were, for the most part, stellar (only 3 Bs). I understand that admissions isn’t solely numbers driven, especially at selective colleges, but I don’t know what to think of my results. I’m a first generation college student so the past few months have been really stressful, as I’ve had to traverse this hectic process alone for the most part. Heck, I applied to Princeton, MIT (rejected), and Cornell, too, and I’m not calling BU a bad school by any means, but if I can’t gain admission here there’s a veryyy small chance I’d be admitted to schools of that caliber. I’m thinking my lack of interest may have played into the decision, but I really don’t know.

So I spoke with my guidance counselor today in school, and she called our local BU admissions officer. Initially, in short, she said she would need to speak to people higher up and would call back later in the day. When she called back, she basically said that filing an appeal is possible via email. I hope they can understand the confusion in my application process.

@cougar4

Well we’ll all find out about the Ivys in just a few days. In the mean time, I recommend not stressing about it. I was rejected from my local state university (not hard to get into at all- it was my safety) and just got accepted to BU SMG.

It’s somewhat random, and I don’t think a rejection (especially not a waitlist) from BU is cause for concern with the Ivys.

@EtiquetteOfWar

I’m not too worried honestly, just a bit confused. I got into Boston College yesterday and UCLA last Friday, so I’m a happy camper (even though I’ve kind of had an Ivy or nothing work ethic the past four years- I live a town over from Princeton). At this point, though, I don’t care whether I get into an Ivy or any other elite college (although it would be nice). I’ve come to appreciate the journey I’ve had through high school and the sheer amount of determination and will it has taken to get to this point. In my eyes, it’s not the destination, but the thousands of hours of work and motivation day in and day out that has meant the most. That transcends the name of the university I choose to attend.

The appeal was SUCCESSFUL!!! 3 weeks after sending the initial email of appeal along with one from my guidance counselor, I was admitted into CAS today. I found out after receiving an email that only admitted students received (about applying to their Core Program), and then I checked my portal where I found it was official.

Congratulations Dontrejectme! I think your hard work and persistence paid off.

Could you please go over how you went about appealing the rejection in detail? I could possibly need to use that information.

@AndrewL3 - Sorry if this is a bit late but I first went to my guidance counselor. She called the school asking for an email address to which to send the appeal. I wrote a letter of appeal, and she wrote her own basically lobbying for reconsideration. I emailed both from my email account. It took them 2-3 weeks I think. I received my mail acceptance a few days ago. However, I wasn’t rejected from CAS initially. I was rejected from the 7 Year Program, so I actually wasn’t even given consideration for CAS. So the letter of appeal was basically to have the admissions office actually to consider my application for CAS.

Hello, congratulations on being admitted into BU (although I am a year late)! I am in a similar situation now, and I wanted to know what are the requirements/deadlines for appealing to BU? For some reason, I cannot find it anywhere on their website. Thanks!
