My son was not admitted to his #1 choice, UCSB, but was admitted to UC Davis and Cal Poly. He declared a History major. His test scores were SAT 1250 ACT 29. His UC weighted GPA would have been 4.1, but his school district (Santa Rosa City Schools) did NOT upload his Honors Courses from Sophomore year into the UC portal. (We indicated this in the additional comments section of the application.) Therefore, he did not get extra grade points for his honors classes sophomore year and his UC application GPA was a 3.9. Is it worth it to submit an appeal with a letter from the Superintendent attesting to this error, which was no fault of my son? He has all the other things going for him…strong essays, 4 years of cross-country and track, strong senior program, lost his house in a wildfire and persevered, etc…
If it is an administrative error made by the school, by all means appeal the decision.
What I do not understand is why would the school district upload the honors courses when it is up to the student filling out the application to list the correct courses and to check that everything is reported correctly before submitting.
UC’s do not require a transcript until the student enrolls.
He got in UC Davis and Cal Poly SLO or Pomona, so I do not see this was an issue for their admissions??
Also not all Honors courses are UC approved and will not get the extra Honors points.
FYI:
Appeal stats for 2019:
Appeals submitted: 718
Admits: 47
Hey! I got rejected from UCSB for Global Studies and want to appeal. I got had a 3.5 UW, a 4.1 W GPA, and a 4.04 UC GPA and really good ec and strong essays. I know I had really low stats so I was wondering if it is worth it to appeal to UCSB and explain the low stats??
@Hope0316: Are the reasons for your low stats, New and Compelling? If so, then appeal your decision.
Thanks for responding! My mom has a health issue that I look after (and wish to stay close to her), I was a paid intern during my junior year (which kept me from focusing on academics but I also wish to go back to work there during my college years and I can drive from UCSB to work), and I had to fit in as a gay individual which kept my focus off of studying but I’m not sure if that’s enough
@Gumbymom do the above stated reasons sound like excuses because I definitely don’t want it to sound like that
@Hope0316: Staying close to your Mom due to her health issues is worth noting. An internship that took away your focus from your HS academics is not a reason worth pursuing. Job experience should be enhance your academics, not take away from it.
@Gumbymom Thank you! My internship was at an office so I learned international relations jobs, I didn’t learn any specific subjects so I was wondering if I should put that it took away from my studying time but gave me a hands-on experience that will benefit me in the future?
@hope0316. You are trying to get into a college so academics come first while Job experience comes later. My opinion, so take it or leave it.
@Gumbymom ok thanks!
Whenever I submit my appeal on the portal it takes me to a page that says “You have encountered an application error. Staff have been notified and will try and resolve this issue as quickly as possible.” Is anyone getting this error too? What do I do? I emailed the admissions director and team and nobody is replying.
ur appeal is going to get rejected. Just cause your schools says its honors doesn’t mean it will get honors points. Also you do know there is a cap on the amount of weighted points you can get for UC. Just go to Davis, CP, or even better community and then transfer with TAG.
