I’m planning to start an appeal process because I’m missing a required class before transferring to UCI. I don’t want to blame anyone but the reason behind this is because two of my counselors made an ed plan for me WITHOUT including the required class. The crazy thing is this class is not offered at my CC, which means the class is not listed on assist, therefore, both counselors did not include the class on my planner. I’ve been following their planners and also classes on assist, assuming that I don’t need to take it. I also have clear pieces of evidence that they did not include the required class by showing both of my ed plans. Altering a decision with an appeal can be very difficult but in your opinion, do you believe my reason is strong and valid enough to be sent out? I’m also stating that I will be taking the required course over summer to make up the missing class.
Well you haven’t been rejected yet and also I think you should look at the guidelines for an appeal because usually they want new and compelling information so they can reconsider your application. I’m not sure if explaining them why you missed the class and that’s why you were rejected therefore you should be admitted is a good reason to write an appeal
Edit:
“For a Freshman or Transfer appeal to have merit, it must bring to light new academic and personal information, as well as information pertaining to extenuating circumstances that had not been present in the application, and that clearly shows the student to be stronger than had been earlier evidenced. Please note: high grades received in the senior year, recently acquired awards, or an increase in activities are not a basis for the reversal of a decision”
Idk if this will be considered as an extenuating circumstance
I believe it’s definitely an extenuating circumstance because the situation is definitely out of my control. The point of being a counselor is to guide students on the right path and to make sure they are getting the right courses. When I first started college, obviously I relied heavily on my counselors because I thought they’re supposed to help me out with my goal. Trust me, if I knew about the missing class, I would totally take it, it’s not like I’m trying to take the easy way out. I’ve been living under the impression that I don’t need that class at all because none of my counselors ever mentioned it. I even tried to take an alternative class to be sure but UCI reps told me it will not be accepted. I’ve tried my very best but clearly I can’t really avoid the fact that the counselors gave me wrong information.
Edit: I remember coming into different counseling appointments to check my TAG process and every single one of them confirmed that as long as I finished my classes on ASSIST (which I did), I should qualify for TAG but there is a missing class that they did not spot.
No one on here can give you a conclusive answer as to whether or not UCI will consider this an extenuating circumstance. You have yet to receive your admission decision but if you truly wish to appeal, if you do get rejected, there is no harm in trying. Obviously it is unfortunate that your school counselors misinformed you, but at the end of the day no one can tell you what UCI will think about this whole situation. I wish you the best of luck though.
I see your point but it’s probably a rejection most likely because the UCI rep clearly stated that ALL required classes must be completed before transferring. Unless I applied with a 4.0 GPA then yeah there might be a chance, but standing at a 3.5 with a missing class, very rare.
i applied missing a couple of required courses and was accepted. I just wanted to let you know it IS possible to be able to get in while also missing some courses. def wait until you get your decision.
do you mind if i ask what were your stats (GPA, major, EC’s, etc) and also did you get accepted through general admission? your comment gave me a little hope today lol because I’m only missing one. The UC reps are just intimidating because they keep emphasizing on “finish ALL major requirements before transfer” which lowkey brainwashed me.
While it is unfortunate that your cc counselors missed the class, it is still your responsibility to make sure that you meet all of the requirements for the major you are applying for. Especially since you applied through TAG, you had to confirm when you submitted your TAG application that you had completed the list of required courses with the required grades. I agree with @hoshizora that this is not really something that I would consider to be an extenuating circumstance, but I guess it cannot hurt to a try.
May I ask which class you were missing?
I know exactly which class I’m missing. It might sounds crazy but during the application period, I went in with my counselors to double check on my classes and they all told me that I’m on the right track. Based off of their comments, I assumed that I’m on the right track.
Perhaps that class was added in the recent articulation for 2019-2020? If you entered CC for 2018-2019 period then I think that’s the articulation you’re supposed to follow. Since there wasn’t one on ASSIST it would be the 2016-2017 one until they updated it towards the end of last year. I had a friend who was missing a core requirement but he got accepted through TAG because they told him what I mentioned above about the recent articulation changes. If that’s the case then I think you should be fine and don’t have to assume you’ve been rejected yet.
Honestly from my experience CC counselors were no help. I waited for UC reps to come to my school and check every single requirement with me. While I know it’s hard to find out you missed a class it’s too early to tell if you’re gonna get rejected because of it and that you should write an appeal. Just… Chill
i just double checked with 2016-2017 and the class has been required ever since then. I know that I might come off as a negative nancy but im assuming the worst case scenario so i can plan accordingly HAHAA. i trusted my counselors bc the cc that i go to is a very good community college and also very impacted so i assumed the counselors here know exactly what theyre doing.
Hmmm I see I know there are certain cases when a missing class is overlooked but no one know the reason why. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough but again you haven’t been rejected yet it’s too early to tell
It is fine to get everything in place for an appeal, but you cannot submit your appeal until you are officially denied. Also as several posters have remarked that ultimately it is up to you to check the course requirements and you cannot blame your counselors. Best of luck and hopefully the appeal will not be required.
Additionally if rejected — before you go off half-cocked about this you should find out WHY you were rejected. It might not even be this reason.
thats a good point to note! i dont know if this means anything but im planning to take the matlab course over summer and although u cant really submit a TAU at this point, a UCI rep told me to report the coursework to an academic counselor (which i already did). does this mean that the UC is more lenient enough this year to let me report a late notice?
honestly, it’s under your control to know what you need to take as well. counselors are there to give you advice, you really can’t rely on them 100%, you always have to know what you need to take via assist by your own research. I think the UCI admissions will look at your appeal as a negative, because at your age, in college, you’re responsible for the classes you take and the grade you receive. But still, you might get admitted. Just my opinion.
