Appealing to UC Berkeley

so did tiff_th apply last year or this year?

"Oh yea... I'm a first year... it's almost been one year since I've received my acceptance. =]"

Also do you guys know if we find out about acceptances and rejections at the same time or are rejections saved until like may 1st?

Tiff_th: It's rather comforting to finally hear of a success story! So did you present any "new and compelling evidence" in your letter? And do you remember how long it took for you to get a response after you sent your letter? :)

kyledavid80: Hmm, now that I think about it, I guess my coursework was nothing extraordinary. I've only taken 5 AP classes (1 in my sophomore year, 1 in my junior year, and 3 right now). It's just basically 4 years of accelerated/honors/AP english, 1 year of Honors Chem, and now Calculus and French AP, mixed with some regular classes. What's more, some meanie up in the hierarchy decided my Journalism class no longer meets UC A-G requirements, so only one semester of journalism counts toward elective credits. I have less college prepatory classes than others...

Well, I've already sent in my appeal letter and I know they've received it anyway. And to quote a Cal alumna, Pauline Kael, "Where there's a will there's a way. If there is a chance in a million you can do something, anything, to keep what you want from ending, do it. Pry the door open, or, if need be, wedge your foot in that door and keep it open."
(I incorporated that in my letter, hope it doesn't sound too pretentious, and hope not too many others incorporate it either, less we all end up with identical letters!)

Here's to crossing fingers and odds slightly better than one in a million!

vouloir c'est pouvoir

it took me somewhere around a month to receive a response. i didn't feel like i presented any new or compelling evidence at all really. haha. i feel pretty lucky. =P i basically just told em how awesome i am all around! =X haha.

i'm a first year at Berkeley. i appealed in spring 2006.

I just sent in my appeal to Berkeley a couple days ago, but I just realized that I forgot to include my application ID number. I know it was a pretty stupid mistake...I was so busy with my letter and recs that I forgot one of the most basic things I was supposed to include. Anyway, does anyone know if I am screwed because of that? The only identifying information I have in my appeal is my name and home address. Will they still be able to identify me and bring up my application to reconsider me? I'm just really worried now.

yea i'm pretty sure your name and home address is enough....unless someone in your home has the same exact name as you.

I'm in a similiar boat. I'm thinking about going to Cal day. I wouldn't mind going to see the the school again and talking with an admissions officer or physics(my major) professor couldn't hurt me.

I sent in my "appeal" on April 6th. Technically I don't know if it's an appeal or not. I got in for the Spring, but I'm asking Berkeley to reconsider me for Fall Admissions. Around when should I expect them to reply? Do they only reply if you get your appeal accepted? And how do they reply? By e-mail or snail mail? Sorry for so many questions, but thanks to anyone who answers them!

I know for regular appeals it on your Berkeley admission status. i think it would be the same in your case too, but i am not 100% sure. i am just another appealer.

Hmm, tiff_th I'm a little confused now! So you didn't appeal until Spring 2006 or you appealed and you got in for Spring 2006? If it's the former, then I didn't know you could wait till spring to appeal.

And ilovediamondz, I think your admissions site should say something if you log in right? I sent in my appeal after you and when I log in, there's a little note on my page that says they've received my appeal and it's in review. I'm really scared to log into the myAdmissions site these days, even though I know they won't post a decision till much later X_X

To check your appeal status go to the regular website where you checked your status in the first place! I got accepted this morning! I was SO HAPPY!

i appealed in spring 2006 to be accepted for fall 2006. i'm just finishing up my first year here at Cal. sorry if i confused anyone.

i never send in my admissions ID when I appealed. it's not necessary.

These are my stats and wants to know what are my chances to get in and what are if any possibility. I live in new Delhi and am an Indian (so International Applicant). My first preference is Cal so thats why reappealing.

and lots more like this which all I have mentioned and posted to the appeals committee

The reason I could not get a good SAT score is which to the base of my appeal is the date on which I had my SATs. My sat 2 was on November 2007 and SAT 1 on January 2, 2008. The year from June to end of February I was suffering was typhoid and jaundice. I am still recovering but I am not that wll but am ok. Even with this I was suspected to diabetes one year before but its not serious but the case is of preliminary stage. The disease can be cured with medicine. Therefore I am having in months lot of diabetes and other medines. I was weak then but better now but am not that fully well.

Do you think my circumstance will be well to get me considered at UC Berkeley??

Also forgot to write in the before post that I rank 4/50 students in my class. The Indian system or the education sytem does not have a GPA system. But for consideration my marks in most of the subjects are mostly in between 80 to 96 out of 100 marks in all subjects that I have in from class 9 to 12.

To which addresses do I mail my appeals packets for these two schools?

Also, are their deadlines?

If Berkeley is your dream school, appeal away, its a no risk option aside from the time you spend with the appeal process (i dont think its a lot of time though…)

As far as feedback on your app goes, your SAT1 and 2 scores are definitely hurting you, and i think your ECs are on the weak side.

I agree, but how are my EC’s on the weak side? I am assuming you looked up my stats via my profile statistics…?

I have nothing to lose. Just don’t know where to send the two letters.

ok, its not appalling that u got rejected. lots of ppl with ur stats have gotten in but a lot of students with stats better than urs also got rejected. prob a fruitless endeavour to appeal

I have a turbulent disorder I didn’t mention, which I will in my appeal.
