Appeals class of 2023 thread

Congrats @Ryboy1! I think my son is probably a long shot since he never got waitlisted. Thank you for sharing.

Denied. Just found out a bit ago. We knew it was a very slim chance. Ah well their loss. One more appeal to UCI for my son. See how it goes. Good luck to all of you still waiting.

I GOT OFF! I think it was through my appeal since it didn’t say decision pending for my appeal but I’m so excited!

Does anyone know how long appeals take? I sent one in today because I recently found out there were some mistakes with my GPA. I had a TAG and the only reason i wasn’t admitted was due to my GPA. I sent my transcripts with my appeal. Typically how long do appeals take? Does having a TAG or anything help me get my application re- evaluated sooner?

@professorchez I filed mine 4/13 and got my decision 5/11, so a little less than a whole month for undergraduate admissions. Can’t speak for transfers though! Wishing you all the best of luck!

@cakerusk congrats! Happy for you glad one of us made it. We’re you waitlisted or were you going off a straight appeal? Just curious. Thanks

@TwoforT Is your son a freshman? I don’t think many freshman get in off appeals. Still worth a shot if there is any new major information you can provide. They don’t want to hear a sob story about how its your dream school, and grandma got sick during finals so you got a bad grade. My appeal was a simple paragraph asking them to re-evaluate my application with the updated transcripts I provided. Its also better to do the appeal now, if you wait too long they might ask you for spring grades.

@professorchez yes my son is a Freshman. He appealed off a mistake in the way his volunteer and extracurricular activity hours were input. Could have been seen as far less than fulfilled. He had almost 300 community service hours and 2000 extracurricular hours including sports and work that were input do it looked like 10 percent of that. He debated putting but ultimately decided to mention his ADHD that affected his GPA and test scores especially in math. This was not mentioned in the initial application. He got two very solid letters of recommendation and sent his fall senior transcript which was a 4.2. We know it’s a long shot but he really wanted UCSB or UCI. Still waiting on UCI so we’ll see what happens and accept the result. Ultimately I want him to be happy and successful. I believe he will end up where he is meant to be whether these appeals are successful or not.

@TwoforT That sounds like you have a pretty good case, as long as the appeal letter was short and not an essay. What you should have done (and what you still need to do if you haven’t) is talk to the transfer counselor and ask them to look at you application and see why you weren’t admitted. Personally I think the stuff about having ADHD isn’t good to put in an appeal, I think the only way you could play that one off positively is if you had a letter from a psychiatrist/therapist if he has one(if he does get him to do that and mail it to them). I also don’t think it looks good to appeal on everything that they list you can appeal on. All they really want to know is if any mistakes were made on your application and any new information to fix the mistakes. Did he apply to or get in any other schools?

@professorchez yes we were really debating the whole ADHD argument because I know it could backfire, but I also thought if he didn’t put it and didn’t get accepted it would always be a what if. We did get the pediatrician to corroborate the diagnosis and an official letter from the doctor was included as an additional piece in the appeals package. He applied to most of the Uc’s with the exception of riverside and Merced and was accepted into UCSC which is where he sent his SiR. He was also accepted into Cal State Fullerton and Cal state Long Beach. The idea of calling and asking admissions why he didn’t get accepted is a good one. I didn’t know they would reveal that information. Although as you stated it’s probably too late for that now. Irvine will hopefully have a decision within the next week as it’s been five weeks since the appeal went out. Fingers crossed.

@TwoforT That good you got a letter from your pediatrician you might have a shot. I dont know how UCI does things but i meet with a counselor at UCSB on the 4th. I also called admission this past Friday and the lady helping me pulled up my application. I dont think its too late, they can look at it as long as you give them a perm number. If he got into UCSC that’s great, It seems difficult to get into a UC as a freshmen with tons of competition.

Thank you @professorchez! I’ll keep the forum updated with my sons appeal. Good luck with yours too. It sounds like you have a very good argument. I hope you get into your top choice. I’ll be rooting for you!

@TwoforT Thank you so much! I was waitlisted, so I’m thankful that I was able to leverage that to an extent. Sorry to hear about your son and hope that his appeal gets approved for UCI!

Update: D received her acceptance letter today and it states “The Admission Review Committee has reviewed your appeal and has recommended you for admission for the Fall 2019 term.” So my D got in based on her appeal even though she was waitlisted too and her appeal status still says decision pending. Her letter was simple, about 1 page and a quarter, and reiterated the reason for her interest in Psychological & Brain Science, discussed what it was about UCSB that made it her first choice (she discussed specific research going on at the university unique to UCSB and her interest in behavioral genetics), and updated what she had been doing since filing her application in November. With the appeal she was allowed to submit her first semester transcript which were all As and 2 letters of recommendations which were from a math teacher of 3 years and a science teacher of 2 years. She had a 3.85UW/4.25W and 33 ACT score. Hope this helps those thinking of appealing next year.

@Ryboy1, was the acceptance letter sent via email or postal?

@JayArRed My D was first notified via email on May 7, then received an acceptance package via mail on May 13.

@TwoforT I just hear back form UCSB yesterday I got Admitted! I’m so relived I thought I was going to end up at UCM or UCR. Any word yet from UCI?

That’s great @professorchez ! So happy for you! Was yours a straight appeal or waitlist appeal? Sorry if you already told me but just wanted to see how many non waitlists got in. We are still waiting on UCI. The more time goes by the less hopeful we are. It will be 6 weeks waiting on Monday. I did hear that we should all know by the end of next week though. I will keep you and the others posted either way.

Submitted an appeal and was on the waitlist and I heard back yesterday that I was admitted.
4.0 UC GPA, 31 ACT, 1340 SAT
