Apple discontinues back to school promo?

On the website, it says that they discontinued the "buy a mac, get a free ipod touch" promo, but that they have educational pricing year-round. Does this mean that I should just splurge now since the new macbook is out?

They probably realized they were getting too popular and the deal wasn’t really earning any profit. I joke, I am not sure why they stopped it but I say go for the new MacBook.

It looks amazing and Apples product are being used by a lot of Colleges. So its pretty much a win - win for you.

Starts in the summer

I have no assurance that they will do the same promotion this summer, but they have been doing it for about the last 5 summers. It seemed to be one of the ways that they depleted their inventory of iPods just before coming out with new models.

Ohh, I thought “no longer available” meant that they discontinued it entirely…

It usually starts around June and ends in August/September.

Educational pricing is pretty good, typically $100 or 10% off but you don’t get the free iPod.

It is very, very likely they will have it again. Helps them get old iPods out of their stock, and actually gets them a profit. Many college students are wary about splurging on a mac, but the temptation of a “free” iPod gets many. Also, many people upgrade, so actually spend more money on Apple products.

Can you stack the education pricing with the free ipod promo? that would be a really sweet deal if you can. three months can be a long time to wait though…

The ipod promo is essentially on top of the education pricing.

They offer it now in Japan, if you come sometime
The school year starts from early April.

What exactly do you mean “on top of”?
Do you mean that if a person were to buy a mac during the promotion that education discount isn’t going to be available? Does the person HAVE to pay full and get the ipod?

The iPod offer gives you educational pricing AND the iPod. You don’t get education pricing on top of the college offer because you already get it.

I’m confused a bit as well. So do you get say, Macbook Pro 13 inches for $1,100 + iPod (educational pricing + iPod) or $1,200 + iPod?

The educational pricing would be the same no matter when you bought it. It would still take $50-100 off whatever Mac you wanted to buy. The promo just gives you the option of purchasing an ipod at the time of purchase and then being reimbursed for that amount (Up to ~$200 i think) via mail in rebate. Theres no stacking deals because there’s really no other deals to stack.

The educational pricing is available year-round from the Apple online Education Store. As long as you qualify, you can get the education discount.

For at least the last 5 years, Apple has also instituted an annual ‘Back to School’ promotion that offers 100% rebates on certain printers and iPods that are purchased with a Mac computer (including the education discount). This promotion usually starts in the late Spring and goes through much of the Summer. Last year, I bought my daughter a MacBook Pro, a nice Canon printer, and an iPod Touch. We submitted the rebate forms and received full rebates on the printer and iPod in about a month.

There is no guarantee that Apple will do this again, but if I were buying a computer with the educational discount, I would wait until June to see if the rebate promotion kicks in again.

Final detail: the 100% rebate was for the iPod Touch 8GB. We also had the option of buying a higher-capacity Touch and getting a rebate back equivalent to the cost of the 8GB model.

Thank you both for your replies. The confusion is now gone for me :D
