I heard that Apple somtimes gives a free iPod with the purchase of a MacBook Pro. I am going to get a new MacBook Pro for college, and am wondering if anyone here knows anything about their typical summer promotions. I heard they may be giving away a free iPod touch, which I'm not sure if that would actually be true...anyone have any information on this?

They usually do it in July or August.

I’d wait until mid-summer before buying a laptop. They’ve done it for several years in the past.

I think it’s a way for them to get rid of a bunch of soon-to-be-old iPod models and sell lots of macbooks.

Beware about what the model is. I got my ipod touch in the promotion last year (an extra $100, not free, during early August), and got the second gen version, not the then-current third gen. Still a good deal though.

^Ah, good point…they’re on 4th gen. this year I think…right? So they’re probably giving out the 3rd generation ones this time. I bet they give that, and then I could pay the difference and upgrade I would think…

@kyoakyoa- how much capacity was the iPod touch you got with the promotion?

idk when the free ipod deal is starting but I know that if you show your student ID (college acceptance letter works too), you can get $100 off a Macbook and a $100 off a printer.

It has 8GB, which is somewhere between 6 and 7 GBs of actually usable storage. Great price for $100, but if you are interested in the new features then you should be sure to read the fine print.

^So they don’t always give free iPods, but a discount that makes it $100…how much is that one originally? I’m trying to guess based on that how much the iPod touch might be if they put that on that type of deal, and I would need to upgrade and get the next one, cuz 8 GB wouldn’t hold all my music, I’d need the 32 GB iPod touch.

Actually, it was a free iPod touch with the purchase of a Macbook, and it was the current generation (at the time, the 3rd generation) that they were giving away.

It’s also worth noting that Microsoft just started theirs, so don’t expect Apple to be too far off.

I heard there’s a new operating system “Lion” for Mac this summer…anyone have any knowledge as to when that will come out? I would like that of course if it comes out in time, but if it doesn’t come out til late July/August, idk if that would work for me then.

WWDC is coming up soon, so they’ll definitely be demoing Lion in its more final stages, and perhaps then a release/ship date will be announced.

Yeah, I sure hope they have the free iPod touch thing this year, because I love those!!!

And for the OS- typically, do they announce a release date a few weeks or days or whatever, and then it actually hits the stores, or…???

(keep in mind, I’m new to Mac/Apple, so I’m sorry that I don’t know a lot of this stuff!!!)
