Does the application essay change from year to year, or does it stay the same? I just got back from visiting Rice and I want to write my essay while everything is still fresh on my mind, and it seems to me like the essay topic they have would be the one they would use every year...

Yeah, the personal essay prompt about the "unique perspective" you can bring to Rice was on the freshman application I used as a senior in HS and the transfer application I just filled out.

But if you're thinking about writing your essay specifically about Rice, I would tend to say that's not the best idea. Write about you, your take on things, etc. I guess, write about whatever you think you can the best though...

yea difinitly i would not reccomend writing it about rice. i agree with mack.

I'm not going to write about Rice specifically, but I may mention a couple of things I noticed in the campus visit that hit me in particular.

i did not talk about rice at all really. Only until the last sentece where i said that I really wanted to go to rice. and i guess it worked. I was admitted ED!

yeah, my short answer responses were rice-centric but my essay was just about me personally... i do think, though, that you need to show that you really want to go to rice, so it would be good to work yr interest in somewhere in the app

I mentioned Rice once in my essay. I think my very last line was something along the lines of "Accepting me as a student would greatly add to the cosmopolitan quality of Rice University." Gosh that sounds so conceited now...

Well I definately want to work in my excitement about Rice at some point, although I will probably focus the majority of my essay on myself, naturally. I don't want to go too deep into what I'm going to write, though. Right now I'm too tired to write it anyways...

make that ur last paragraph..thats my advice...how u really like rice.

You can show interest by contacting people at Rice... the application even asks for that. As for your personal essay, it's personal. Do what you want. However, I don't think that a paragraph about how much you like Rice really defines your personal qualities or diversity of experiences...

Take this with a grain of salt.

I contacted rice so much that they knew my by face and Name before i even got accepted at admissions. that is good strategy.

Ok, ok... I was never planning on writing an essay about why I like Rice and why I want to go to Rice etc... I was going to throw in a few tid bits I had picked up through my contact with Rice students over the weekend- some of the more ellusive and random aspects of Rice life and history that I would tie into a few of the points I would like to make in my essay. Naturally though, the majority of my essay will focus on my personality and characteristics, and these things I wanted to throw in would be used to enhance the points I was making and the characteristics I was trying to get across, and it would also be a subtle way of conveying how interested I am in the school. (I cared enough to actually remember these things)

I think I was misunderstood and we've gotten way, way off topic. All I really wanted to know was is this the same essay they use every year (so I can start thinking about what I want to write) or do they change it like some schools do.
