There's no essay? Am I missing something?

Nope! Seems too easy doesn't it? To paraquote a favorite movie of mine:

There's only one catch: There is no catch!

No Essay, No SAT II's, Free Online Ap, they even accept a faxed copy of your Collegeboard scores (if sent from your high school), and you will get a quick decision. However, your grades and test scores better be up there or you may not get in.

Rose has a higher acceptance rate than most schools of its quality, but you have to visit. It's size and location would demand one to visit to see if it is the right fit. My son and I stopped by as a last minute decision when we were on our midwest visits last winter (U Wisc., Purdue, UIUC, Penn St. and CMU). He only applied because of its rankings and it so easy, and we only went there because he was already accepted. He loved Rose and will now be showing up next week for orientation.

Plantree:
How's the merit aid there? US News makes it look decent - 24% applicants offered average of $8000, but I never hear much about it on here.

Need-based aid looks mediocre: 89% applied, 73% determined to have need, 12% had need fully met (includes PLUS loans). (We don't qualify for need based, I just put that on here for others to ponder.)

Sorry, can't help. We got Stafford, Perkins and 13K gift aid. I don't know what amount, if any, is merit based.

Thanks Plantree.

i absolutely love this college! it's ranked 1st in engineering i hear.
it also has a good quality campus, and small class sizes. it should be an ivy, but that's okay. it's my 1st choice anyway!

I'm a freshman here at Rose and I can attest that it's an absolutely awesome school.

You will not find as friendly of an atmosphere anywhere else.

That said, the people will make efforts to reach out, help you, befriend you, etc...but ultimately it's what you make of it. If you're extremely anti-social you can refuse all their offers, close your door, and have a really crappy experience. But they make it hard.

The profs are also great. I've just dropped in their offices on several occasions, and besides taking as much time as I need to help me understand the problem(s), they were very friendly. I talked with my O-Chem prof for about a half an hour the other day about the best way to get here from Georgia, the differences in climate, the best places to go get some nature experience around here, and just general discussion.

Office hours? What are those? If the profs don't have class or lab, they're available. I don't have any big classes, it's awesome.

That, and you know how many times I've locked my room since I've been here? Zero. No one locks their door because Rose has certain expectations of its students. There's certainly drinking, it's college, what do you expect? But Rose trusts its students not to get plastered and burn down the frat house. Why? Because we're fun-loving people, but we're still Rose students. At bigger schools they have to put restrictions on their students because they get immature people who have no self-control.

If you don't have self-control and discipline, you'll quickly find yourself on probation and out the door.

Re: Post #5,

I see in this year's US News, Rose-Hulman's merit aid has slipped from 24% applicants offered average of $8000, to 24% applicants offered an average of $5700.

Weenie,
First Apply, visit when you can, and apply for aide. Upon your visit, you will know if the school is for you, then hopefully an Acceptance and sufficient aide comes your way. The USNWR rankings and aide numbers mean nothing if you don't like the school and if you need the aide they try to do what they can to help you go there.

can anyone tell me if minorities are accepted well here or are they ignored like a big school????

Just another vote... you've got to visit!!! Its a great place we stopped there and I feel in love with the school and the people. I was accepted at several other top name school and will be going to Rose this fall.

Everyone is so friendly ......you will love it.

why is no one answering my question from post 12? :(

Yeah, they're accepted well. It's such a small school that it's quite hard to be 'ignored' (I don't really know what you mean by that term). Everybody gets treated pretty much the same here, it's based on how you act. If you're an introverted, antisocial person, people are going to figure that out, and you'll lead a solitary existence. But if you make the effort, it's not hard to fit in here at all if you want to.

thankx a lot

Just sent in my application! It says to expect the yea or nea within three weeks, but is it right that that doesnt start until the end of September?

Yeah, first decisions are made October 1.
