Just wondering if anyone out there regrets some of the schools that they applied to or if anyone has found themselves regretting not applying to other schools?

I applied to UCSC, UCSB, UCD, UCLA, and Cal.

Not sure if I regret applying to any school in particular but what I do regret is not applying to any CSUs.
I recently read something about how certain CSUs have good programs for my major and we all know CSUs tend to be less costly. I just find it frustrating that I've barely found this information after looking (apparently not hard enough) for months before the apps were due to see if I could find any good insight on CSUs in my field of study... oh well.

I saw your post about being unsure about UCSB because it’s a school with an environment that is opposite of your personality. I looked through some of your past posts and saw that topic about needing biased opinions.
ocnative was right, you really should have applied to UCI! I, like you, applied to UCSB but am not a fan of the partying, drinking, hookup, ONS culture UCSB has but thankfully I TAG’d and also applied to UCI.

I guess this post doesn’t really help since it probably gives you even more regrets but that’s just my contribution. But hey, you said you have/had a 4.0 GPA, you’re bound to have a very good chance at all the UCs you applied to. It doesn’t really sound like you need CSUs as a backup.

I only applied to UCI, UCLA, and Cal. I didn’t even TAG UCI…
My regrets would be not using the TAG and not applying to more schools just in case. I also regret how I did on my essays.
I have a 3.95 GPA, work experience, and pretty good EC’s, but I botched my personal statements pretty badly… I was able to send UCLA new ones, but Cal wouldn’t accept them (which is not good, because I hear they emphasize them the most out of any UC).

I only applied to UCLA Biz-Econ, UC Berkeley Haas and USC Marshall; don’t regret one thing. Worst case I will file an appeal to get into my alt major at UCLA and do their accounting minor program.

I didn’t apply to UCI because according to assist they didn’t accept any of the lower division courses needed for my major and I wasn’t too keen on the idea of spending an entire semester playing catch-up if I didn’t need to.

I still have my 4.0, but no guarantees that it will remain that way, though I am going to work hard this last semester to keep it. Well the CSUs aren’t really back-up schools, they simply would’ve just been more options, and cheaper options at that.

I’m a little iffy with UCs right now since I’ve had a couple of professors who I really trust tell me that the quality of my education might be a bit lackluster because of the way that the UC system works.

Oh the quest for scholarships.
I think most of us always wish that we would have started looking sooner, that we would have looked harder, etc… School costs so much money now-a-days its ridiculous. I consider myself an avid fan of education; however, I’m not a fan of the reality of paying too much money to go to school to get a degree that won’t help me a get a job (because of academic inflation) and ending up having a boatload of debt that I will spend way too many years paying off. I guess thats just an overtly pessimistic look at life but I can’t help but feel that way sometimes, oh well, I quite like school and I’m in it for the learning - hopefully I at least get that out of it, a good education.

Considering you’re an Anthropology major, how is the UC system not good for you? It’s heavily research based. Which Anthropology is all about, most of the time.

I regret having applied to so many cal states. I applied to csula csulb csuf and cal poly pomona. Thinking i wouldnt get into any schools at all. Got into all four… now i wish i would have just picked one saved an extra $165. I also regret not applying to USC

@ocnative
The research component is a big part of why I primarily focused on UCs; however, I’ve been told (obviously can’t know this for myself) that many of the professors at UCs are more concerned about their research and that teaching isn’t really something that they put too much of their focus on. I suppose that might be a really bad generalization, but I’ve had several professors (who have been through the UC system) tell me very similar things and I would by lying if I said I didn’t find that intimidating.

I guess I’ve been spoilt at my community college. All the professors I’ve had with the exception of an odd few are all passionate about their fields and deeply involved in the process of teaching; they are always available if a student needs help and are excited to talk with students who display interest in a course beyond “i need it for transfer.”

I’m sorry not sure what your major is but as far as I know CSULB and Cal Poly Pomona are pretty legit schools.

About your botched essay, I don’t really know how much you blew it, but one of my parents’ friends used to read essays for some university’s admissions department, and he said that he could always tell when someone had gotten tons of help from their teachers / parents / professional essay writers. What he valued most was a level of sincerity that makes you look interesting, even if it wasn’t the greatest piece of writing.

@AnthroFlo oh I am totally happy to have gotten in, but I am a history major and Im scared CPP might not be a great fit as i would have wanted(from what people are telling me) i wish i was some sort of engineer major lol just to go to CPP, and CSULB is pretty good for History. So if anything I would have only applied to one of these(leaning towards CSULB because of my major) maybe both tho lol… and for sure not CSUF and CSULA(those were like back up to my back ups).

@bomerr I know i heard! but due to personal problems dealing with unexpected financial issues I can’t afford any more applications. its killing me but I just can’t

@sonic23
I felt similarly about Cal Poly SLO, I’ve heard a lot of great things about the school but I don’t think their anthro program is the right fit for me at all CSULB is not by any means a bad school, if I understand correctly, its one of the better CSUs (and more selective than some UCs). Is CSUF referring to Fresno or Fullerton?

@AnthroFlo If i don’t get into any UCs it looks like CSULB it will be for me. Pretty excited about it sent my transcripts today, and I mean Fullerton, I applied but don’t want to go only because i know to many people who go there, and they say its very difficult to get classes. Even at my ccc I can always find a way to get the classes I need. So thats a negative point imo

What UCs did you apply to?
I’ve been around the CSUF area and man I was tempted to apply just because I thought that the school was in a really nice area. I would hate to go to a uni where I couldn’t get classes, its an express pass to prolonging your stay and shelling out more money.

@AnthroFlo exactly! Nice campus, but wouldn’t want have to stay too long. I applied to UCLA, UCB,UCSD,UCI, UCR, and UCSB. Im hoping to get in any really lol. Which did you apply to? Did you TAG to any? I had TAGed to UCSC but than i realized because of work I couldn’t move there.
