escaping riverside

gave the uc transfer app a shot.
currently my stats are a modest 3.46 gpa at UCR, major breadth aside from a couple of classes done, and a quarter and half head start in credits due to ap testing way back in high school. starting an upper division classload next quarter.

i'm trying to get in at either ucsb, uci, ucsd, or ucla. anybody on the same boat as i am, or want to throw out any odds of admittance?

To be honest, I think your odds at I, SB and SD are pretty good. There’s really no way of telling with LA. I hope your essays were good; I know they’re important for UC to UC transfers because the UCs want to know why exactly you are in need of transferring.

ucla is a longshot for anyone i figure, but i thought it was worth at least a shot.
if it helps, i’m an english major, so i would hope that my statements were at least a bit better constructed than the average applicant, but it’s been so long since I applied in high school it’s really anybodies guess.

i never thought applying just for the fun of it would have me feeling this desperate to move, though. I think i’ve permanantly lowered my morale as a student here.

I’m also applying from UCR. I didn’t actually mention any reasons for transferring in my essays though…they didn’t ask, and I didn’t feel like forcing them in there.

And I know what you mean. Since I’ve set on transferring, I’ve REALLY set on transferring, haha. It’s tough, because I want to just sit back and enjoy my college experience, but I can’t get the desire to transfer out of my head. Ah well, hopefully I WILL transfer, and then the desire will be satiated, haha.

And I’d say your shots at SB and SD are pretty good. Can’t honestly say I think you’ll get into UCLA, unless your essays were wonderful or you have some really good EC’s. I mean, it’s not totally out of the question, but you do have a bit below their average so you’re somewhat disadvantaged. But SB is an awesome school, and I’d go there over SD any day of the week.

Is UC Riverside really that bad? One of my friends recently dropped out from UCR as well and is now attending SMC in hopes to transfer into CSU Long Beach for nursing. She said the overall area isn’t the best and feels so isolated in comparison to LA or SB.

ixr, it’s tough for me to say. the school atmosphere is probably the biggest drain- campus itself is devoid of any real culture, and ultimately, people simply do not want to be there. it definetly takes its toll on you over time. that being said, it’s not as bad as people make it out to be either- off campus housing, for one, is extremely inexpensive. never did i think that i’d be living somewhat luxuriously for the amount of money i’m paying. if you meet the right people, which i’ve been lucky to have met, riverside does have its moments. when it comes down to it, i can’t imagine it being as bad as merced or even santa cruz because ultimately, if your looking for a distraction, los angeles or san diego are about a half hour away.

I’m hoping to transfer from Riverside as well and I agree with you on lowering my morals. I feel that this campus doesn’t show much motivation to do well in academics. It is like a limbo stage where the students are cruising by until they graduate.

what are your stats, distracted?

Im embarrassed to post this but I only have a 3.3 overall.
I have completed all of my lower division classes for my major and a good majority of my breath requirements, i think i only have two or three left.

I think you misunderstood what he was trying to say there, distracted. I don’t think lakerfan was saying UCR lowered his morals, but that wanting to transfer caused him to have a lower morale towards the school.

distracted, i still think you have a fighting chance at ucsb and perhaps even ucsd if you can manage to raise your average post-finals.

Maybe morale rather than morals.

meant morale, but i do think the morals got shot a bit somewhere down the line, too haha.

@lakerfan3118: Santa Cruz blows Riverside out of the water, by far. In fact, any other place would top Riverside, if just for the simple fact that it’s not Riverside. Well, any other place except maybe portions of the bible belt…

ya ive heard nothing but good things about santa cruz as far as social environments go for schools… and its a really pretty area. riverside is ugly.

OP is… an English major…?

yeah, i’m an english major.
i’m definetly not in a position to defend riverside; i mean, there’s a reason im trying to get out of here to begin with. but, defining the “social environment” is pretty subjective- things can definetly be considered dull around here, but i don’t have a shortage of people willing to play beer pong on a given night. it’s all about who you know. there are some advantages to going to school here- if you want to live in a reasonably sized house for a fraction of the cost and you know the right people, it’s a good choice, because ultimately, when things do get boring, all you have to do is drive a couple of minutes away for a distraction.

One thing that’s good about the ucr area: Canyon Crest Shopping Center. Not sure if you guys have been there, it’s like a mile from campus, and it’s really nice and pretty. It’s all I want in a shopping center!

I still can’t get over the fact that my friend out of high school got into UCR with a sub 3.0 GPA and 1300 SAT score. I can’t help but think they don’t even care who they accept. That’s what makes me not want to go there. Oh and also because of the trashy location.

1300 SAT up to 05 was a reasonable SAT score. The equivalent of a 2000 or so. A little low for Tier 1 schools, but for UCR, UCSC, UCD, UCM, UCSB… more than high enough.
