Applying as a Canadian

I’ve read a bit about students applying and adding additional papers/essays that weren’t asked for… (for example a 40 pg. essay on feminism or some independent study essay)… I typically excel at writing and I was interested in sending something like this in, but the applications and brown website do not mention anything about it? Could anyone give me some info on ways to go about this?

Also, anyone from Canada applying willing to give some general tips? I was specifically wondering about recommendation letters, no Canadian universities require them so the idea is pretty foreign to me. Do you just approach your favorite teacher and ask?

Using the Common Application, there is an allotted space for each applicant to submit “additional information”, which can be used to your liking. Many students use this space to submit creative writing pieces or their resumes. However, I would advise that you keep the additional material minimal (maybe a portion of the 40 pages?).

Ah ok, that makes sense! Thank you!

And anyone willing to give advice on the recommendation letters?

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of threads here on CC that discuss recommendation letters. Use the search function.

But yes, you approach two teachers who know you well (academically and personally) and ask them to write a recommendation.
