Applying for Housing

Has anyone applied?

I want to but am waiting on the postcard. Curious to know if anyone has gotten theirs? Said it should be here mid to late feb, so if its not here tomorrow, clemson will be getting a call.

I haven’t gotten mine. Does anyone know if Clemson House is all or primarily freshman?

Housing is always behind on their stuff - I’ll see if I can figure out what the deal is with the postcard (I heard someone say that if you call them, they’ll give you the info).

Clemson House is all freshman with exception of any upperclassmen living in the Civics & Service House living community which is located in part of Clemson House

I got my postcard today in the mail. I’m in Anderson, SC

Okay thanks, do you recommend living there during freshman year?

Clemson House and McCabe are probably the two nicest freshman dorms. McCabe is in a great location while Clemson House’s location isn’t as great (kinda off on the side) so it’s really all up to you. It’s not that bad, just a little longer walk to places on campus but it’s a pretty nice dorm.

Daughter got hers today all the way in Miami. It’s funny that it’s earlier than some people’s because I think she was dead last to get her acceptance letter, 9 days after they sent it out. She’s really not sure if she’s going to Clemson, though. How competitive is it for housing? Like, if she doesn’t put a deposit down now, will she get shut out? We already put a deposit at one other university because they frequently run out of housing, but obviously, I don’t want to put a deposit at all four universities she’s still considering!

Alex23, housing priority at Clemson is based on the date that you applied to Clemson so there is no rush to apply for housing at Clemson as long as you apply by May 1st! (after that date you lose all housing priority but obviously you’ll have to make a college choice by then)

Freshman are are guaranteed on-campus housing so nobody will be “shut out” of housing.

Thanks. Good to know. Yes, she’ll be visiting Clemson in early April and will make her final decision then. They called her the other day to see if she had any questions, which was sweet (but a scholarship would have been sweeter).

Yeah I got mine yesterday as well. Guess I’ll be filling that out sometime in the near future.

pierre0913 - what is your opinion of the “Shoebox” dorms for freshmen? My son liked the proximity of those…curious. Thanks.

bltkmt, I’d say that the Shoeboxes are a typical freshman dorm. Not as nice as McCabe which has suite style living (2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom), but about par with what you’d fine with freshman housing at other universities. Location is definitely a plus. Right up the street from Death Valley and Littlejohn Coliseum, a nice short walk from Fike Recreation Center and post office and union is right next door. Not a bad walk to most of your classes depending where they are. What people in the High Rises also don’t realize is that the dining hall on that side of campus closes on the weekends so to eat on the meal plan, they have to come over to the dining hall closest to the Shoeboxes so that’s nice as well not having to walk 15 minutes to get food. Dorms do have communal baths but there is a sink in each room which is nice if you want to brush your teeth etc… Rooms in the Shoeboxes are tiled as opposed to carpeted in the High Rises. Here’s a description of the dorm: [The Shoeboxes : Clemson University](http://www.clemson.edu/campus-life/housing/living-options/residence-halls/shoeboxes.html)

Pierre, I applied in mid-August so I would probably get my first or second choice housing options (McCabe and Clemson House). I was also looking into the Clemson Business Experience (the business living learning community), but saw it was in Benet Hall. McCabe and Clemson House definitely look nicer than Benet, but do you think it’s worth living in Benet for the business experience?

I can’t really answer that for you as I wasn’t in the program but I have heard from people that it was a great experience and well run program and other people who have been in other living-learning communities seem to have great experiences as well. You’ll have to decide what you want more, a nice dorm or getting to live with people in your major (and getting some additional programs as well). Here’s some information about the CBE: [Clemson Business Experience : Clemson University](http://www.clemson.edu/cbbs/academics/aac/business/)

Okay, thanks!

Go for CBE! It’s a great program and most of your classes will be close to Benet.

Any insights into which freshman housing options fill up first or fastest? D has late October application date so we’re curious if everything on the menu would still be available for her.

It’s hard to tell with October since I don’t know how many people apply when. To be cautious, I wouldn’t put too much hope into getting the top options (McCabe or Clemson House) since applications open in August but I think she would get her choice of either the High Rises (Byrnes/Manning) or Shoeboxes (Young) at the very least. Again, that’s just what I think, I haven’t really kept track in the past of what application dates have been getting what dorm.

This also depends if your s/d will be studying in a specific field that either requires or suggests a certain building for residence. My son filled out Clemson House as his first choice until he read that the RISE program will be in another dorm and has to be put down as his first choice. In the end, even though I had been fussing over dorms, he said whatever he gets will be fine, he’s just so excited to be going to Clemson.

R00tb33r, there is no field that requires or suggests a certain building to live in. The living-learning communities are 100% optional and there is nobody is forcing your or pushing you towards living in those communities (if you aren’t going to take advantage of the resources that RISE offers, let somebody else take your spot in the program as there are limited spots).
