Applying to Columbia GS after graduating early from high school

Would I be able to apply to GS if I graduate in my junior year and spend my senior year of high school doing something else besides attending high school?

If I’m not mistaken the GS school is those who need a “special” schedule, like people who have families or are working, so I don’t think you can apply there as a freshmen.

I think you can. GS does have freshmen. The only schedule difference is they allow is going to school part time rather than full time.

1) if you apply to GS/JTS program - yes.

2) normally if taking just 1 gap year it is GS’s discretion and usually ends in GS referring the student to CC admissions. Why? GS is not set up to babysit 17/8 year olds (different kind of counseling, expectations, etc.). and it provides no need-based financial aid if your family requires funding, and they do not want to be responsible there. it often is not a good academic/personal fit to be a student in GS. that being said i know three cases of something similar to what you stated. 1) a student who graduated in senior year, took a year off, applied and was accepted. he was older for his age and made the case for GS in his application - less of a core, ability to be part time, etc. 2 and 3) foreign students who needed to take some english courses to build up proficiency. GS has an American Language Program that feeds into the school. usually after a few months of taking the class you are admitted and able to go to GS. this is usually for very talented math folks that are lighter on the language. outside of the examples, i do not know anyone. i know of a few students who ended up in CC who applied to GS because they misread the gap year as forcing them to apply to GS - GS contacted them and asked if they wanted to switch to CC. again only 2 cases i can remember.

point being that GS does not probably get a lot of students that severely buck the trend. most students at GS have spent some time at another institution or in the workfield. vast majority. and the average age when i was in school was 28. consider the average age of med school 1st years at most schools is also about 28.

I see. Thanks for that great answer.
