Applying to Honors Colleges

Based off the information I've been finding, you only apply to honors colleges after you have been admitted to the regular college. Is this true for all schools? Are there any schools where you have to apply for the honors college/program by the admissions deadline?

I am not 100% confident of my answer but no one else has replied. I know two students who applied to several honors colleges within larger universities and they had to apply to them WITHIN their original application.

At the University of South Carolina you apply with your regular application.

It depends on the school. They all have different criteria. Some have different deadlines so pay special attention to that!

Varies by school I believe. For instance at Maryland you’re automatically considered as part of the admissions process.

It really depends on the schools. Some may have that as an option in the application, some will invite admitted students to apply, some will automatically consider for honors program without further application, some may have certain requirement in college before applying to honors program.

Agree with @billscho. Rutgers, I believe, notifies you after your regular admission whether or not you got in to the honors college, and if you don’t get in, you can write an essay and appeal their decision. BU, on the other hand, considers you for admission to the honors college and regular admission at the same time.

LSU you apply with your regular application by clicking a box. Alabama and Clemson are after application. UGA some are auto admitted with application and those that are not apply later.

UMich would depend on which school as they have different honors program policy in LSA and CoE.

Depending on the school…once I added my schools to the common app, there was a section marked questions or asked if i was going to apply for the honors and when I checked yes another box opened for me to write additional essays. Was the same for colleges that were not on common app. So I suggest to add the schools to the common app and look over application questions or start an application on the schools you want to apply to and see if they ask for separate essays.

Thanks everyone! :)
