Applying to Minnesota for Fall 2014

My son's guidance counselor wants no one to turn in applications until they are back at school in August!
Am I right in assuming that the general application to Minnesota is straight-forward information?
And can someone tell me if there is a separate scholarship application? Does it require essays or other longer answers?
If so, could someone tell me the actual essay question(s) so my DS can work on the essay in the summer, when life is a bit easier?

The application for Fall 2014 will be available sometime in July. You’ll probably apply online, but you can review a pdf file of last year’s application here:
http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/PDFs/13-14_FreshAppForm.pdf

The application is very straightforward and there are no essays or long answers required.

You’ll automatically be considered for nearly all of their scholarships. Some do require separate applications … you can see which ones here:
[Scholarships Requiring Separate Application](Freshman Academic Scholarships With Separate Application | Office of Admissions)

Minnesota application is now available.

I don’t see the point in waiting. Minnesota uses rolling admission so the sooner the app is in, the better.

Ask your son’s guidance counselor. It was pretty easy to apply here and was very straightforward.

Applied last night but was never asked for gpa or ACT score, do they just wait until they receive them?

You request for your scores (ACT/SAT) to be sent to Minnesota. Your GPA will be on your official transcript which your school will send to Minnesota.

Some schools asks for the scores on their applications but usually you still have to send the “official” scores/transcript to the college.

So the reason your guidance counselor may have asked you to wait is because sometimes they have a series of steps they want the kids to go through in the fall to get teacher recommendations requested/sent and transcripts sent from the high school. At most colleges even if you fill out the application online (or on paper) and provide it to the college, the application is not complete until they have:

 • Test scores (ACT or SAT). Some students have them sent to colleges they already know they want to attend when they take the test. If you did that for MN, then you are set. Otherwise you need to go to the testing website, log on, and send them (provide credit card to cover the cost).
 • Transcripts. Most colleges want official transcripts (from the institution) for all high school or college courses completed. If your kid has taken any dual enrollment college courses, talk to the high school counselor about how those grades will be provided to the colleges. Usually high schools send those directly to the colleges somehow (electronic or paper, depending), but you have to tell your hs guidance counselor what schools you want them sent to.

It looks like MN does not require teacher recommendations, so that won’t matter in this case. But guidance counselors do sometimes put some guidelines around requesting those and transcripts to try to get the kids focused and organized, and thus less likely to make the teachers and GC office crazy with dribbling in/poorly timed requests.
