applying to prep boarding school

hi, i am applying to prep schools like exeter and andover for 06-07... anybody have any advice? (especially on interviews)Thanks.

I haven't been to any of those schools, but a general rule would be: Be yourself.

I am graduating from one of those. Be friendly and genuine in the interview, show interest in the scchool but don't suck up.

Which do you attend out of curiosity? I'm class of '06 at Exeter right now. I remember my interview at Exeter quite well and the best advice I can give is to be genuine and earnest without appearing to be sucking up. Show genuine interest and academic drive and whatever you do, come of very poised. If you are timid or over anxious, that will hurt you. Be relaxed and you'll do fine.

ok... thanks.

any other advice??? btw, do you think peddie is a good school?

don´t know much about peddie, but deerfield, exeter, andover are all very good

Are you applying for entrance in the year 06-07?

My advice: keep up the good grades, do some EC's that you are interested in, and enjoy Middle School before 8 hours of sleep becomes rare.

Yes.... What are EC? Are you in exeter now??

yeah, extracurrics. bump bump bump

bump bump bump....

So you are applying for Prep year? Do you already have your interview appointment? Which school will interview first? Also.......how much effort have you put into looking at the course curriculums? The interview isn't hard but you can do some prep to make it easier and memorable.

Yep, for Prep year. yes, I have an appointment and have andover first (alumni off campus). Maybe i should research the curriculums, more, would that help??

I heard peddie was a great prep school

I highly recommend looking at the course catalogue, the clubs, the special opps which may be called senior seminars or some such name. Overseas programs. It is most helpful if you have some knowledge of what the schools offer, why is going there more appealing to you than your local school? The BS will want to know what you are going to take advantage of.....why should they give you the opportunity? Are you thinking of participation now? or just if you get admitted? Know a little about the history and mission statement of the school.....each is different. Once you do this.......all questions thrown to you will easily be developed into a knowledgeable conversation and that is your goal. Good luck.

Thanks a lot Hazmat, that was rather helpful, I'll keep it in mind when doing the interview...

awin, what can you tell me about Peddie (ie strengths)?

Oh and one factor I forget.......know the housing arrangements at each school. Some schools put all first years together, others put you in a dorm for your entire 4 years, some use houses and others change it up each year. Also know a little bit about the % of kids on financial aid....even if you aren't schools are looking for students who can reach out and make it happen.

Ok, thanks, (I'm just curious, why would I need to know FA percentage, are they going to ask me about it in the interview??)

I was at Loomis Chaffee last year (my junior year) but came back to California because I didn't like it. When I did my interviews at Deerfield, Taft, and Loomis it definitely took practice for me to be relaxed. The first school I interviewed at (Taft) rejected me but my interviews at Deerfield and Loomis went very well and I got into both. My interviewer at Deerfield told me that she loved that I was opinionated and strong, she liked that I was talkative and talked about mature subjects with her. (I talked about politics mainly because of the whole schwarzanegger business going on at the time in california). Definitely stay relaxed and I would consider having the interview more important to you second....but maybe it's just me.

OMG.... i have the same questions!!! oh, and thanks again hazmat
