applying to prep boarding school

Many of the top schools make a point of 30% and more of the class having financial aid. They are not looking for students who cannot accept students in the class who come from lesser advantage. It always makes you look like a strong applicant if you know this and can make statements that support and have some understanding of why/how/who regarding financial aid.

Also, I had not read course catalog and did not know much at all about the schools. In fact, I think it is better to ask questions and show your interest in the interview because it won't come up otherwise. She/he will not ask you how you feel about the dorm situations. The main questions I was asked about were my extracurricular activities, why I wanted to go to boarding school, etc. They just want to get to know you a little bit. (Also, if your interview goes over time, it's a really good sign! My interview at deerfield was nearly 2 hours!)

They may not ask but if you have some basic working knowledge an applicant can then work into some developed responses: show a little effort. Anyone who interviews applicants likes to have the conversation with a kid who can expound and show some interest. Good luck to all of you. I loved boarding school and still think of it as one of the best experiences of my life.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ANSWERED!!! that answered a lot of my concerns....

So should I say, "I know that your financial aid amount stands at 30% and look forward with working alongside people of mixed diversity?".

Sort of: The financial aid amount is not 30%. The percent of student body is 30% and you might state that you believe in idea of financial aid, when you can you plan to contribute, you would welcome getting to know students of all types and from all walks of life. There is strength in diversity of the class.

Mixed diversity? I think what you are saying is "students from every corner" as Exeter uses the description.

yeah, that's what I meant (sorry). When should I say this though, during question time (is there even question times?)

Also a minor suggestion: You are not working beside but rather living with, forming friendships to last a lifetime with, sharing living space with. The WITH is much more personal and involved than "beside". This is important for you to understand and comment about.

The conversation will evolve as does any interview. Get your knowledge down, practice listening and recognizing opportunities to input your wisdoms. It is kinda like the conversation w/ a parent when you are waiting to put your opinion in, your desire and work it into the natural flow of converstaion.

You will have opportunities to ask questions......it may be in the summary or end.....it could be earlier but it will happen.

For an alumni interview, are parents interviewed too (I know that an on-campus interview does)

If possible I should think yes.......in some instances parents may not be available. You will do fine, your parents will do fine.......it is an interview. Remain calm.

That's true, I guess.

And how should I remain "calm"--- the next four years, and maybe college, is basically riding on this!! BTW, what do they ask the parents, but my parents are also freaking out...

I'm also curious about what the parents' are asked too, any ideas?

bump bump bump

MERRY X-MAS everyone... (nothing else to do so.)

When the parents are interviewed, the interviewer mainly tells them about their impressions of the child. Your parents do not need to prep for the interview.

Oh by the way, mikep3, for interview tips/questions, go to last year's archived forums, they offer a lot of good advice :)

For current students, how would you rate the top schools FA? (I heard that SPS, for instance, is very generous.

Peddie is all minority now due to annenberg money. the school always sucked now it is for agressive retards and sucks in a different way. forget it.
exeter is still great along with andover st pauls and lawrenceville. but lawrenceville has a new headmaster a few years back and she screwed up the school taking every retard she could find to even it out. she probably is on the take. why nobody knows so she must need the money personally. as far as interviews goes dont be yourself. DO NOT BE YOURSELF. tell them a BS story they love that. then begin another BS story for college so consider the prep interview an audition for college. but DO NOT BE YOURSELF that is the stupidest advice I ever heard. What are you going to talk about getting laid, getting wasted and how much you hate the crappy boring books on the booklists every year? how tests are suck and studying is a waste of precious youth?
so show up in a tie and jacket look like a preppy jerk off. dont have booze on your breath that is not a good way to start unless the clown on the other side of the desk is IRISH. Talk about dogs, make up a story about your family crest and how much your grandfather loves the school.
also talk about lacrosse and hockey and the rest of the jerk off sports if you suck at sports tell them you have groin injury from 2 years ago. oh yeah make sure you are wearing a striped tie. pick the school colors thats a good sucking around technique. I think that ought to get you in.
tell them your nickname is skip or dickie or boxie something totally ridiculous. tell them you were named after your great uncle who was a Harvard man.
after 45 mins of shoveling that crap around look at your watch and ask permission to leave because you have to meet your grandmother for dinner. shake hands make sure you washed them and dont have chewed filthy fingernails. be really polite to mask your BS story.
And above all dont look desparate they can tell a loser a mile away and then you are screwed. be aloof they like that crap that is what they want from you in the end so give them a taste of it during the interview.
good luck hope my great advice helps you. dont listen to these other kids they prob are poverty stricken and go to some public dump school.

Are you serious, MrRomantic???? Did you ever apply to those schools?
