applying to prep boarding school

just look at the websites for these schools look at the alumni sections with the parents and you tell me ARE THEY SERIOUS IN THIS DAY AND AGE? Apparently they are serious so follow the above rules and you are in with the rest of them

When I was younger, I got into Andover acting just like the cocky know-it-all prick I used to be back then. The interviewer said I had "spunk" to my parents. I would have gone but my uncle brought up a great point. Many of the kids who go to the top notch boarding schools like Andover or Exeter, have entire family trees who went to HYP, talk about legacies. I'm 1st generation Turkish, so I figured I'd have a better shot at getting into an Ivy league by going to a public school since only HYP/etc will only take SO many people from the prep schools, the majority of which I assumed would be legacy admits (a status my recently immigrated family didn't have the luxury of). Though we were by no means poor.

Just my 2cents, you might want to mull over that fact. If 20 kids have legacy for a couple generations, and only 15 kids from that particular school can go to say...Harvard, you can be damn well sure that competing against the legacy pool will be an uphill battle, especially since those students will also be qualified to boot.

yeah, that's another thing I'm kinda of concerned about, applying to those schools. Some say it gives me an advantage applying to college, others say no, so i really dunno.

If your public school district is of **** poor quality, then it can only help. But if you have a good school to go to, I know I did since I live on the north shore of Long Island, then you're much better off going there and not competing against the dozens of legacy candidates.

okay, well, I'll applying anyway, and if I get one, I'll consider that and others.

holyspirit, that's what my dad keeps telling me. He says that I'll be competing against some of America's genuises for high rankings, spots is Ivy Leagues, everything, and that in the long run it'll benefit me more if I just stay here. I see his point, but I'm still going to apply...

Same thoughts for me!

Go for it. I mean, it's not like you'll end up in community college or something.

Definitely not, that would be horrifying. actually, maybe cc isnt that bad?

Quick question for those who finished interviews: is the interviewer suppose to have a list of ECs so that I can talk about it? What am I suppose to bring?

At my Exeter interview, I filled out a sheet, which was basically like the General Information form w/o questions like where I live, or what my parents do. At Andover (Alumni) I did the same thing.
At my Choate interview, he had me look over this sheet to make sure all my info was correct, and I think (but can't be sure) he didn't know my extracurriculars. But it came out a lot during our conversation.
Hotchkiss was an alumni interview again, so I filled out a sheet.
Bring nothing. I remembered though that this girl had this super-thick binder which was her portfolio...

Oh and before I forget, does anybody applying '10 have an AIM s/n? It would be cool if I got to talk to some of you guys...
Mine is Lethal Caffeine and The Oreoboy

THERE'S A SHEET FOR THE ALUMNI THING???

What was the portfolio filled with, and did she get in?

You guys really need to relax.

yeah, easy for you to say; you got in sps!!!

Sorry, no AIM.

haha yes, 4 years ago. Don't bring a portfolio, you just look like an overeager kiss-ass. Also, don't act like a d-bag during your tour, the student who gives your tour fills out a really basic sheet saying what they thought of you. usually I'm really nice and give the benefit of the doubt, but if the kid and his parents were really annoying I usually put it on the sheet. Biggest thing to avoid on the tour, don't talk about how great you are or your test scores, this is usually a bigger problem with parents. If your parents are braggers, tell them to resist the temptation, because it is one of the lamest things to listen to when you're giving a tour.

oK, (my parents were going to do that!!), and it was another girl who brought the portfolio.

^haha i know you didn't bring the portfolio, i was just warning you. are you applying to st. paul's for third form? if you are, you should consider hooking up with my little brother, he'll be there next year, the ladies consider him good looking.

Yeah, well I would have nothing in the portfolio (that's how boring I am). Yes, I am applying to SPS third form. What is your bro's name?

bwahaha, i won't tell you unless you go there. ill also tell my sister not to haze you (she'll be a senior next year at sps). just kidding about the hazing.

Are there seriously hazing????
