Applying to Prep School!!!

Yes, call asap. Part of applying to schools is filling out forms and following directions. With so many kids applying, they can afford to be picky...I know its unfair and frustrating and they should accept other scores. Good luck, and the SSAT isn't that much different than any other test.

Prepparent are MOWC you guys are the best. Thanks for taking the time to answer. I hope that I can be as helpful to others.

Prepparent- The schools don't breathe a word about any bad recs to the kid. They have to go through all the steps- give you the tour, take your application fee etc. Our first go-around with S, we weren't quite sure how bad the English teacher's rec was, but found out later it was pretty bad. The teacher had some real issues and didn't come back to the school, but S had issues, too! None of these boarding schools want to take on "a problem" and there are too many good applicants for them to have to do so. S wound up taking a circuitous route, but wound up in a great place.

yes, i understand, I guess i was thinking that maybe if they felt you were not competitive they may in some way discourage you in applying. Now that I think of it, this makes no sense. They like there numbers to be high just like the colleges. MOWC thanks for getting me back on track.

What about group session interviews?

Jilly, we never encoutered group session interviews. They do have group sessions that are informational. Is that what you mean?

My lil sis has applied to Andover for 9th. Does she have a shot?

Private school
AfAm American
SSAT - Verb. 93%
Math 86%
Reading 91%

Overall - 94%

EC - Costume Design
Performance in plays
CTY last summer

Really new to the whole prep school thing, can anyone give me any advice as to whether these stats are good enough for Andover? Thanks in advance

menunno, the stats look good. I think she will be very competitive. Did she apply to any other schools?

menunno, I sort of have the same stats, but I never went to JHU CTY. Hope your sister gets in. Is Andover her first choice?

On February 4th, I recieved letter from Andover that they did not received my recommendations and parent statement. I was very mad, because I sent them on January 15th. I talked with the Admission office, fortunately, they would not consider me as late applicant as long as I sent them in asap. Then, I went to the USPS office, and they kept saying "I don't know" for whole time. Did anybody ever exeperienced this?
I was very sorry for my teachers....
Also, does everyone wrote Thank you note after interview?

skyykj, hopefully your teacher and your parents make copies and you can send them in rather than having to recreate from scratch. I would mail them return receipt requested so that you know who at Andover signed for them.

As for thank you notes, it's a definate must do item, for everyone you actually spoke with, including whatever student gave you a tour. Good luck.

did anybody had letter-disappearing events?
As I described above, my letters just vanished, but on the same time my sister also sent her material to Andover and she did not have any problem. Are there any thiefs at Andover post office so some canidate could not get to Andover? (joke) Also, does everyone in this forum used UPS or FEDEX rather than USPS?
My parent forced me to use the USPS becuase of its price.

You can use usps and do certified, only a little bit more money. Now, I would fax what I had, and send certified. Worth the time and effort. Thank you card is a must. Old fashioned, maybe, but worth the 5 minutes it takes to send. And competition to get in is so fierce, you never no ; )

I used DHL. I used regular post (i'm from hong kong) the first time, and I sent my essays and parent statement out on Jan 4th. They didn't get them, so I DHL-ed it on the 28th. Fortunately, the schools didn't consider my apps late. I guess they're pretty relaxed about it.

Did EVERYONE write a thank-you note to the interviewer? I didn't! Are you supposed to? I'm pretty worried now... I had the Head of Admissions interviewing me for Exeter, but for Choate and Lawrenceville I had two alumni. Do they all expect thank you notes?

I don't think not sending a thank you note will hurt you but it is a good opportunity to say a bit more about yourself and your desire to go to their school.

Its not to late to send a thank you note. it is always good form to send a thank you card, and not by email. Did your parents even suggest a note?

It sounds like sending a thank-you card reads : I'M A HUGE SUCK UP!!! I'M SO DESPERATE!!!!

That would not be true. It say's you enjoyed your meeting and your'e really interested in the school. Imho it would be a wise practice. I will even suggest if you get waitlisted or rejected that you send a thankyou letter/note.

fortunately, the admission office allowed me to send my documents via fax. Also, my teachers told me they were sorry for what happened. Office told me that I am not considered as late applicant.
I had weird event at my Exeter alumni interview, the guy's name was Mr.Ewald, and he said that Exeter have dorm named after him, but he said me and my sister was the only person he interviewed this year.. Accorinding to the deed of gift, Mr. Samuel Philips wanted to have youth from every quarter and nobody in my area (central Virginia) even no there is boarding school in Massachusetts. Do I have better chance of getting in?

Exeter , has for years been very successful recruiting in small towns across America.
