Applying to Prep School!!!

kevster, im applying to westover, choate , loomis, and taft.

swordchic, it's one of my favorite pastimes to teach kids the time warp. I always do the time warp at school and when i babysit. I know all the songs by heart!I should go to a theatre and dress up, considering im in la, but i haven't.

Yes you have the right R.L. - applying for 9th grade and maybe, maybe they will take as many as 10 kids! Odds aren't great, but I have to say the school is perfect for me however what I think isn't what is going to get me in. Are you from the Boston area? I'd guess yes. Everybody I have talked to keeps asking about sports and I do love sports and play soccer, basketball and wrestling but I didn't play up that part of me in the application process, now I wish I did. Oh well, fingers crossed.

smoothie - just looked back to see where you are coming from (knowing Roxbury Latin) and see you are at Andover - cool. I have no desire to board. I've always made A's and scored a 96% on the SSAT so I think my marks are good enough but I have heard so much about schools looking for additions to their sports teams that I wish I played that card a bit more. After all everybody applying to R.L. has straight A's and better SSAT scores than me. Some of your earlier posts sound like where I am at right now -current school pace is sometimes unbearable (slow) and I know I am going to get lazy because there hasn't been a need for me to study for tests, the teachers go over everything so many times. . . I'm not sure about my rec from my English teacher - she doesn't like my messy notebook and I think she resents that I know the material before she teaches it. She is always telling me that I am really smart but I need to be more organized. I know I should keep my notebooks more organized but we haven't gotten in to anything I need notes for so I kind of let that go. Well, wherever I am next year the material will be faster paced and more demanding. If I don't go to R.L. I will take 5 accelerated courses at the public h.s.

GSH-
Funny you mention the sports. My essay to Andover was about cross-country, even though I was probably the worst runner on the team. I guess it's the effort that counts, huh. I don't think I've ever heard Roxbury Latin being big on sports though. I've only heard about their great math/science program (unusual for a liberal-arts oriented prep school) and their debate team, since I'm on debate. Anyway, I don't know much more about RL so I can't say much more, but it looks like you've got a good shot. Is that your first choice? What made you go single-sex?

Its not that they are a big sports school but I think because they are so small and they want to stay somewhat competetive a jock with good grades may give you a leg up. R.L. is my only choice. The single sex thing isn't too much of an issue for me - I have three sisters, so girls are around all the time. To be honest I just want to enjoy my classes and/or at least feel that they are worthwhile. Your earlier post mentioned "busy work" - enough already hey? I have a friend who may try to go to Andover as a day student - how are they received by the boarders? His mom teaches ther part time so he may board for just the winter. Do you know of this kind of thing being done?

Yeah, busy work is aggravating. You won't find any of it at RL or Andover, that's for sure!

Day students are cool... I'm friends with a couple. Sometimes it feels a little like they're part of their own crowd but there's certainly no stigma or anything. Plus, they're very popular once they can drive. And yeah, actually a lot of day students board for a term, to try out "dorm life." Now, as a senior, I can look back and in all honesty say I don't think I was ready for boarding life when I first came. It is a huge adjustment. People say that boarding school is preppier but everyone knows day students have a cushier life-style: the amenities of home plus world-class resources. In the end though, I am completely grateful I boarded. It was intense. Can you do that at RL- board for a term? If not, you should definitely check out off-campus semester programs like language studies abroad, Washington DC internships, the Mountain School, etc... When do you hear from them?

Goodschoolhopefully,
My 11yo ds is also applying to RL, but for 7th grade. While I am a nervous wreck waiting for the 10th, he is totally unconcerned. He will be away skiing that week so they only way I will be able to tell if he gets in before he comes home is by the size of the envelope.

Good luck to you!

R.L. is only a day school -mailings on March 10th. Will let my friend know about the day student acceptance at Andover - good news for him. What is next year going to bring for you? Lots of kids on this thread looking to go to Andover - thought that was cool of you to step in and offer what you could for them. I'm almost more nrevous for the boarding school applicant kids on this thread than I am for myself, the commitment to go away from home seems to make their acceptance or rejection more intense. I wonder if some get into the same school they will be able to find each other - or if they would even want to.

14 Days Left

Does anyone know the turnaround time you have to accept at any school?

ah yes..you're either a Rocky Horror fanatic or it's just another movie to you...I'd go to one of their shows (in Berkeley or something like that), but my dad's all protective of me and doesn't want me to go...Men in fishnets...that sort of stuff.... ;)

Mamon (Massachusetts Mom?) Hope I bump into your s at R.L. Thanks and good luck to you too! Who did your s interview with? Are you from Boston or a burb? Is he a big jock? Was he "recuited"?

I think the reply date is April 10th. Question: If the financial aid they give you is not enough and they want a deposit how do you negotiate? Is it with the director of Financial Aid or what? I'm really curious.

Esa that is a great question for Prepparent and other experienced members.

Esa. you'll have till april 10th or so to negotiate. you need to make sure they know that they are your first choice ( im assuming ), and that you will need more help financially. by the way, if they really want you, they will give an adequate offer.

Prepparent, do you know what the typical deposit is?

well, my recollection is that it's 10%. when i get home from the office i'll check our papers.

Thank you Prepparent -you always help so many of us out.

ok, here's the deal, MX deposit was $1000. They aplly $500 from this deposit to the studen's school store account, and the other $500 was applied against the second semester bill. I n addition, you have a contract that goes with the deposit. this officially holds a seat for you s/d. Initially in the packet, a post card that can be checked off for accepting , or not accepting their invitation can be sent without the contract/$. however, the seat is held only after the contract/$ is recieved. If you turn down the invitation, they have a spot that ask's where you will be going. I hope this is helful.

We interviewed with Mr. Ellison, he teaches math and ecconomics. Very nice, made my son feel very comfortable. I am sure my son's interview went great. Mr. Ellison was still laughing about it when he interviewed us and told us some of the answers to the questions he posed to my son. I think they clicked. We felt comfortable with him also, but I think DH and I should have sold my son more. Who did you interview with? I am curious what questions you were asked, if all the interviewers use the same ones or not. DS was asked the typical: "why do you want to go here, favorite activities, books recently read, etc. He was also asked what 3 adjectives his best friend would use to describe him, how he would spend a million dollars, and another question ltalked about below.

I didn't know RL recruited. Were you?

Again, good luck. Remember, lots and lots of great kids apply, but only a few get in. It may be they need a jock when you are into playing violin, or vise versa. I figure my ds would excell there and contribute lots to the RL community, and if he gets rejected, they aren't rejecting him, but his type, ie the jock, the irish kid, etc. because they have enough of that type already.
