I don’t know how “relevant” to this sub forum this is but, I was wondering if any of this fall’s applicants were applying to any public or private schools other than the UC’s and if so what were they.
I was considering applying to some Ivy league schools just to see if I would be able to get in, but I know I would never be able to afford them, so I’ll probably only apply to 3 UCs.
I would apply to Oxford and Cambridge, but I know there’s no possibility of that ever happening, so again, I’ll just stick to my three and possibly look to apply to other schools for grad school.
I would consider going to a CSU for Accounting, Nursing, or some other Allied Health major.
You get a higher ROI on your education than most people that are going to the UC’s (a lot of people don’t realize this).
Plus the cost of tuition to attend a CSU per year is only ~15k, while a UC is like ~35k.
Be smart about your education guys.
CSU’s cost roughly 23-27k, while UC’s cost roughly 27-32k. Unless you’re OOS. Tuition isn’t 35k for a UC unless you’re OOS. I don’t know for CSU’s.
At any rate, the cost of attendance is not largely different between the two (it’s not as drastic of a difference as UC vs. Privates).
And also from what I’ve heard the UC’s offer financial aid packages that many times cover a significant part of tuition making them more affordable than CSU’s.
FYI: Tuition costs for undergrad at a CSU is around $7K/year. Include room/board/books, then around $20K/year for in-state students.
@Gumbymom tuition itself is ~13k for UC’s.
Sorry I guess my estimates are not applicable to everyone.
I agree the cost of attendance will vary by the individual. It depends on a lot of factors like whether you can get financial aid, able to commute, or able to find cheap housing.
But the point I was trying to make was that going to a UC is not always the best option. There are other cheaper and better options that people tend to overlook.
I know tuition for UC’s cost around $13K. I’ve had the pleasure of paying that amount for the last 3 years. I misread your post and thought you were comparing tuition costs only for UC’s and CSU’s. My mistake and thanks for catching it.
@iTransfer1 oh, you must be OOS! Well, then certainly your point has weight. I mistook it for COA. For us in-state people, the difference is much less drastic, but for OOS people, yes all that you mentioned ought to be considered.
I got into a few privates last year and definitely advocate applying to at least a couple just in case your in the income brackets that would benefit from going to a private versus public. Shopping sheets are very helpful, but in some cases additional money is tacked on late and having financial options is well worth the application fee.
If it wasn’t for some surprise aid from Berkeley, I probably would have ended up at private myself.
