Applying to UF from private school

I go to a very difficult private school with an average sat score of 1940. As a result, GPA's are much lower at my school. Does UF understand this in the process?

You have to understand that when UF reviews you application, the review it compared to others that applied FROM YOUR HIGH SCHOOL.

This way, it is easier to understand the caliber of education on a school to school basis when they review applications.

thats the main reason they take into consideration class rank, but i would definitely call admissions and ask directly and also mention it on your app.

Agreed with the previous two posters. I also came from a very difficult private school. However, it very well might hurt you to be in the same applicant pool as others from your school. Many individuals from my class were denied with 1350+ scores. Some ended up getting into Dartmouth, NYU, BC, after having been denied from UF.

Yeah. That’s why it’s annoying when some of these really really perfect kids use UF as a safety that they don’t even want to go to. :(

They are also interested in whether you chose rigorous courses that were available to you.
They know that different schools offer different levels of vigor, but they want to know that you went with the rigor that was available to you. That also goes into the mix with your GPA.

I agree with vincanity1. I think its better to be from an easy public school - make a great GPA with all sorts of Extracurricular activities. But you’ve still got to score well on the SAT or ACT.

I think being from a difficult private school can hurt you in some cases unless the guidance counselors, etc. have a really good relationship with the admissions people at UF. I think realationships matter and I think a phone call - assuming the applicant has the credentials - can ensure the applicant gets in. The admissions people at UF undoubtedly will deny any ‘good ole boy’ system exists to any extent.
