Applying undecided

How much of a difference does it make if you applied undecided, as opposed to applying to a specific school? I've heard that your chances aren't as good if you do apply undecided.

really?

I heard the complete opposite.. I heard that your chance is better if you apply undecided as opposed to applying for a very competitive school-- i.e. USC's Business or Annenberg

Well, I've heard both (before this thread). lol. Who knows?

same chances of getting accepted to USC no matter where you apply. if you're denied by marshall, annenberg, or viterbi, then you are considered for the college of letters, arts, and sciences. undecided majors are handled by the college of letters arts and sciences so you have the same chance of acceptance to the the university itself as everyone else.

Does this technically mean it is easier to get into arts&sciences as opposed to one of those other colleges(marshall, viterbi, etc)?

yeah i would say so, because it's less specialized. i talked to an admissions officer, and he said that CoLA&S reviews all applications regardless of which school you applied to.

I called the USC Admin office to ask a question and the conversation ended up on this topic. The recommendation from the Admissions person is to select a major. If you applied as Undecided then the poll of applicants is much bigger than for an individual college, so the chances for admission lower if you apply as undecided. He also mentioned that you can always switch to the desired school/major after you are admitted.

If you don't get accepted into your first or second choice major, you are automatically considered for undecided so it is in your interest to select a major.
