Since it seems like it may be a long while before ds hears whether he receives an appointment (due to their backlog), I’m wondering what he should do if he receives an ROTC scholarship in the meantime. I’m guessing he should accept the scholarship and accept his offer of admission to the university, then cancel both of those if he receives an appointment and decides to accept that instead?

I agree. Neither of those are binding if he receives and decides to accept a service academy appointment. That''s even true if you''re a recruited athlete and sign a Letter of Intent to attend a civilian college.

On the subject of ROTC scholarships-my board was last week (14-18) and I haven't heard anything. How much time does it take them to turn the decisions around and send them out?

Our son's packet went before that same board. They are supposed to be released by March 4th. We were visiting at Texas A&M last Friday (2/18), and they said it usually takes 2 weeks after the board meets for the results to be released. Our son has been checking the AFROTC website every day just in case.

We think we might know something today. Yesterday ds got an email from Clemson (he didn't apply there) saying, "Congratulations on your ROTC scholarship!" Hmmmm....it sounds like Clemson knows something that we don't know! One of ds's friends, who also applied for an AFROTC scholarship, got a similar email from Baylor on Saturday. Ds is going to check the AFROTC website this morning. If there isn't anything there, he's going to call Texas A&M (where he would use the ROTC scholarship) to see if they have anything in their computers about it.

Congratulations, AMDAndrew! My ds also got notice that he received a scholarship in today's mail! Yea!!! We're doing the happy dance around here! He received a 4-year Type 1 scholarship, tier 4 (non-technical major).

Also, he called the USAFA today to find out if his graded essay ever made it into his file. It did, but the telephone recording still says his packet is not complete. The lady at USAFA told him his packet is complete and it would probably be the end of March or so when he'd hear something.

airforce1,
Are you still waiting to hear from USAFA? If you don't get an appointment, where will you use your scholarship? Will the scholarship cover the costs at your chosen school?

I got my Appointment to USAFA earlier this month, but I just got a 4 year type 1 tier 2 scholarship in the mail yesterday - that was a good way to clear up a case of the monday's. Now it's time to wait and see whether I get into the civilian schools I'm looking at.

Is anyone else having a hard time deciding whether Academy or AFROTC is the better way to go? I've heard so many conflicting things. I guess I'm just getting the overwhelmed feeling... like signing up for something that is such a HUGE decision for an 18 year old.

I didn't apply to the USAFA. Only applied for a AFROTC scholarship. I wouldn't like an academy college life style. AFROTC is the best for me. I'll probably go to UC Davis. And yes the scholarship covers everything tution wise for all of the UC's since tution is and fees come out to about 7,000 a year. During my interview i was asked what colleges i applied to and the officer that interviewed me told me that since i applied to all colleges where the tution is under 9k( UC's) i would not recieve a type I or II just because it would not help any more. So i received a type 7 4 year. He was also going to offer me a scholarship after the interview if I wanted to go to a University in his department.

So what schools are you guys thinking of.

Any one thinking of OTS instead of AFROTC or USAFA? Not me, just wondering

Our son has had a very difficult time deciding whether to go with the Academy or with AFROTC. He's wanted to go to the Academy since he was 13, but now he wonders if he'd rather have a more "normal" college experience. Also...there's a girl involved in his decision. As one of my friends said, "Oh, only the most powerful force in the universe!"
