Appropriate Difficulty of Classes My First Term?

Hey, I'll be going to UofO this fall and am wondering if I picked a good course schedule. My goal is to get into a top tier law school, so I need to get as close to a 4.0 as possible (amongst other things). I'll be attending the honors college and am also on the track team.

My classes:
HC 231H
PHYS 251
PS 203
MATH 261
HC 199H

With the exception of the 1 credit course HC 199H, all of my classes are 4 credits and level 200. Is this too difficult for an incoming freshman? I'll be double majoring in Political Science and Physics. I don't want to kill my GPA during the first term.

I’m in somewhat of a similar situation, though I’m shooting for med or grad school and not in the HC.

MATH 251
MUS 264
PHYS 152
CIS 122
PHYS 199

The key to maintaining stellar grades is to make sure you aren’t overworked. Think of one or two of your classes you can afford to take later. If you find yourself stressed early in the term, drop one of those classes. If you need to spend more than four years to achieve your goal GPA, so be it. Good luck!

OregonSenior, that looks like a pretty tough slog. I don’t think the PS class should cause you much trouble, and not sure about the math, but the HC history seminar and the physics class will be challenging.

Is there anyway you could lighten it up a little, at least just for your first term, until you get your footing? It may be this is a schedule you can handle easily, but it’s kind of hard to understand all the other facets of your life – your social life, your living situation, all that sort of thing, until you actually get there and are living in it.

I don’t think you’ll kill your GPA necessarily, but you might have a better sense of how you can best balance things if you give yourself a little breathing room at first.

Thanks for the advice, will dropping a class appear on my transcript/have any unwanted consequences?

No, you have to drop fairly late into the term for it to show up on your transcript.

I was a freshman in the HC last year, and it was definitely tough. I got a few B+'s and I was a 4.0 student in high school. I also have a few friends who were in physics classes and they definitely struggled.
If you’re going to stick with this schedule, be ready to put in the time and effort. :)
