Appropriate time to call?

I hate to ask this, but I was denied and am curious.

When would be an appropriate time to call UVA and ask them if they didn't receive a part of my application or even why I was not admitted?

Normally I wouldn't bother with this, but after being accepted to UNC and UChicago, I wasn't expecting a straight up denial from UVA. Being a first generation student, in the top 6%, SAT scores of about 1380 (albeit my math was 600), I thought I was a good contender for admission. Because I have to pay for my own education, UVA was my top choice as it is affordable and can provide the best education in VA.

Sorry if this comes off as obnoxious, but I don't know what I'm going to do with myself.

I feel for you. Can't you get a scholarship at these other great schools?

UVA admissions is unusual in lots of respects. Unlike most schools, the admissions office will take calls and explain the basis for the decision. If you are curious, it can be useful. But you should not get your hopes up that you will convince them to change the decision.

Iggy,

I didn't know that. I will call them tomorrow and ask for an explanation for the decision.

I don't expect them to change their minds. In all honesty, I'm hoping this was a mistake. Of course, denial's the first stage.

Go to Dean J's blog and search through last year's entries. I recall an explanation of this.

I would like to get an explanation on why I was rejected too...

I got 4 reject letters from the colleges I considered to be my matches.

I am just really freaking out....

But do they really explain why you were rejected when you call the admissions office?

What date did you apply?

I applied at the end of December. What does it matter?

I applied like right before the deadline.

the date you applied doesn't have any impact on the decision
this is from the blog i think. you can probably do a search for it.

My decision was already online in January (although I was locked from viewing it) before I sent in my mid-year reports. On the other hand, people who applied near the deadline did not have their online decision available at the same time I did.

ethician, I feel the same way. I applied at the deadline and shortly thereafter I had the check that a decision had been made, even with stuff in the "to do" list. Other people that were posting the check had applied earlier, so I really felt then that they had seen enough. It wasn't going to be good for me because I knew if I was a slam dunk, it was a slam dunk rejection. I wish I could have been told then that I had absolutely no shot. On the blog it was said that no decisions had been made, but ...

FYI, your SAT is in the lower the mid 50% range of 1300-1480. A student with perfect SAT scores also got rejected. Just call the admissions office, but tomorrow will be a really, really busy day for them. You've got other great options for college, so don't sweat it.

Your decision was not made in January.

I already discussed that we removed that section of Student Self-Service. Because we thought the check, which simply means the all documents are received, was confusing.

Thanks Dean J for replying. To clarify, in case of future confusion,

The check I am referring to said "View Decision" and looked exactly like the page we saw yesterday at 5 pm. The boxes said either Incomplete, Complete, or View Decision. When I clicked "view your decision" (because that was the one that showed for my application) it said your decision will be viewable on April 1, 2009.

A question I had was how important were senior year grades (via Mid-Year Reports) to the University?

I called and was given a very vague answer. The dean I talked to was comforting, though. She kept saying that this year was extremely difficult, but I still don't know where my application was weak. I will be attending the University of Chicago and plan to transfer after my first year. UVA is still my top choice. I'm devastated that it didn't work out, but I will try again. I just can't get UVA out of my mind.
